Earlier this month we reported on the closure of Kolob Canyons Road in Utah’s Zion National Park. The road is the access to views of box canyons, beautiful peaks, and towering cliff walls. However, the road had been closed in mid-November as a portion of the roadway had collapsed and repair work was needed. Park Service officials hoped the roadway would open sometime this winter. But the Kolob Canyons Road job went speedily—the road is now open.
What did work crews do?
- Excavate unstable materials and reinforced the road’s base to a depth of eight feet with geo-grid, structural cloth, and compacted soil.
- Repave more than 6,000 square feet of pavement.
- Install ditches, gutters, and curbs to drain the road more effectively.
This construction repaired damage from a landslide and reinforced the road to proactively increase resilience ahead of future weather or geologic events.
No “best” season for Kolob Canyons

All this might seem a bit “out of season” for visitors. However, the beauty of the area when covered with snow is magnificent. And on the “off season” there’s an even better opportunity to take in the beauty without contending with crowds. For more information (and some great images) on Kolob Canyons, click here.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! Gee, fixed everything AND overbuilt to try to account for future events AND all completed ahead of anticipated finish!?! Wow! How great! How sad that this is unusual. Wonderful to imagine that working harder joined with working smarter to create this outcome. Safe travels!
