Bridges are taking a hit recently. Last week’s huge impact that knocked down (and out) the Francis Scott Key Bridge wasn’t the only bridge disaster. RVers looking to travel I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia must look for alternatives. It’s closed for an unknown time frame, after an oversized truck clobbered a bridge overpass on April 1. But the non-fool’s joke is just another in a line of recent bridge problems.
Oklahoma’s OK
On Saturday, March 30, travelers in the Sooner State got detoured when US 95 near Sallisaw was shut down. What happened? A barge pummeled a bridge on the Kerr Reservoir. In the “least of the bridge incidents” of late, the bridge has since been reopened, after inspectors gave the OK.
Philadelphia creamed bridge incident
In the Philly bridge bust, Intestate 95 northbound will be closed and detoured approaching the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange. Northbound travelers will be directed to use the Betsy Ross/Aramingo Avenue Interchange (Exit 26), turn right on Aramingo Avenue, then make another right turn onto Adams Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North.
Adding to the misery, the ramp from Castor Avenue to northbound Interstate 95 also will be closed and detoured during construction. Motorists will be directed to use Aramingo Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North at Adams Avenue.
The Philadelphia creamed bridge incident will cause disruptions for “several days,” according to PennDOT.
Know in advance – here’s a tip
If bridges are taking a hit, so too are drivers as they cope with the disruptions and detours. Check ahead—use 511 for information on your cell phone.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 Yikes! I am relieved that our next trip does not include any of these areas. Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂
Copycats!
It would seem that bridges on Interstates with “95” were at risk, that week.
I live in FL and still remember one man’s attempt to flag down traffic approaching the break in the Skyway was greeted with the extended middle finger as the driver accelerated to get around him and launch into space. We need to be alert and aware at all times when driving.
We took our tourist friend across that bridge, just to show him, just the day before the Skyway went down. We could have been on it the following day. It makes you think about timing.
Fort Lauderdale Bridge also, 3rd Ave.
While not a Huge impact on rvs, there is no boat traffic for awhile. Crane fell from high rise onto bridge.
Nobody thinks about maintaining infrastructure until it fails. Driving across the Howard Franklin, Skyway and Gandy Bridges in the Tampa Bay area on a regular basis always gives me pause. Then there is that real white knuckle bridge in Louisiana!
We were just in your area last week when our Son came home from Germany for 2 weeks. We love it there. We reside in the Central Florida area.
