Replacing a broken frame leaf spring hanger before it damages your RV’s suspension

By Dustin Simpson
Today, I’m discussing a crucial topic for RV owners: finding and replacing the right leaf spring hanger in the unfortunate event that yours breaks free from your RV frame.

Leaf spring hangers play a vital role in supporting the weight of your RV and ensuring a smooth ride. If one breaks or becomes damaged, it’s essential to replace it promptly to prevent further damage to your RV’s suspension system.

Measuring a leaf spring hanger on an RV trailer is a straightforward process.

Measuring a leaf spring hanger for replacement

Locate the leaf spring hanger: Identify the leaf spring hanger on the trailer. It is typically a metal bracket that supports the leaf spring.

Measure the width: Measure the width of the leaf spring hanger. This is the distance between the inner edges of the hanger, where the leaf spring fits. Use a tape measure or calipers for an accurate measurement.

Measure the height: Measure the height of the leaf spring hanger. This is the distance from the top edge to the bottom edge of the hanger. Again, use a tape measure or calipers.

Determine the bolt hole spacing: Measure the distance between the bolt holes on the leaf spring hanger. This is the center-to-center distance between the holes where the hanger is attached to the trailer frame. Measure both horizontally and vertically.

Count the bolt holes: Count the number of bolt holes on the leaf spring hanger. This is important information when selecting a replacement, as it ensures the new hanger matches the attachment points on your trailer frame.

Check for additional features: Some leaf spring hangers may have additional features or specifications, such as angles, bends, or specific shapes. Take note of any unique characteristics that may be relevant when selecting a replacement.

Inspect the condition: While measuring, inspect the condition of the existing leaf spring hanger. Look for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion, as these factors may influence your decision to replace it.

Refer to manufacturer specifications: Consult the manufacturer’s specifications for your RV trailer to ensure that the replacement leaf spring hanger meets the required load capacity and specifications.

Consider suspension type: Note the type of suspension your RV trailer uses, as there are different types of leaf spring setups. Ensure that the replacement hanger is compatible with your trailer’s suspension system.

Seek professional advice if needed

If you’re unsure about the measurements or compatibility, consider seeking advice from a professional RV mechanic or contacting the trailer manufacturer for guidance.

By following these steps, you should be able to accurately measure your RV trailer’s leaf spring hanger and select an appropriate replacement, if needed.
