Badgers are known for their energetic digging. It’s that time of year when states and other government campground owners start digging for camp hosts. Wisconsin, the Badger State, needs help for a busy summer. Put in a few hours a day, and get an RV site in return. Could you be a Badger State volunteer?
Not just campground hosts—you could “horse around”
Volunteers are need through all parts of Wisconsin. Not only are ordinary “campground hosts” needed, Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources needs volunteer equestrian campground hosts at Governor Knowles State Forest, Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit, Kettle Moraine State Forest – Southern Unit and Wildcat Mountain State Park. If you like horses, being a Badger State volunteer might just be up your alley.
Badger State camp hosts generally do these kinds of things:
- Stay at a campsite at the campground and volunteering for a few hours each day.
- Greet campers and answering questions about the property.
- Help with daily campground operations and setting an example by being a model camper.
- Clean campsites, bathrooms and facilities and helping out with light maintenance.
- Share park information and helping with campground programs.
- Enjoy the company of other campers and ensuring they enjoy their stay.
“These properties are scenic destinations for equestrian riding and camping,” said Janet Hutchens, DNR friends groups and volunteer services coordinator. “Serving as a horse campground host can be a great way to get some extra time on the trail this summer.”
Openings for equestrian campground host opportunities are available from May through November. Actual need dates vary by location. Stay at a campsite at the horse campground and volunteer a few hours per day. A one- to two-month service period is preferred.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! Hmmm, … it is enticing, especially if any of the jobs are close to the arboretum in Madison — what a great place to run in the summer! 🙂 But, nah, have to pass, too much work to do during summer. Still, a great state to chill out (and do a little work, too) during the summer. Safe travels! 🙂
Wildcat is a beautiful park and has almost no cell service if you are looking to get away from it ALL.
These work/camping jobs have become too involved since I started 17 years ago. They want you to do everything if needed. Irrigation, mowing, & trimming trees & bushes, & weeding on top of cleaning bathrooms, replenishing toilet paper, picking up trash, cleaning firepits, collecting fees, the list goes on & on. Selling firewood! And answering questions while monitoring and placing reserved site signage. Too much!
