Own a dog? Sicko on the loose with sabotaged doggie treats

My dog Archie will eat just about anything. His nose is always to the ground, sniffing and eating anything that smells edible. Most of the time I keep him on a short leash. But sometimes I let him run. Now, I wonder if that’s wise.

Look at the photo below. It was posted on our RVing with Dogs Facebook group, where the comments are streaming in. “This is pure evil,” one group member commented, with many more saying something similar.

Dog treats with fishhooks

The photo shows dog treats stuffed with fish hooks. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, a hiker found the treats on the Appalachian Trail in Lehigh County. “Items like these could prove deadly to any animal that consumes them, including wild and domesticated animals,” a PGC statement reported.

Why would someone create something as evil as this, and then place it in a popular area where any animal could consume it, including the dogs of hikers? “Pure evil,” the Facebook member said. I’d add “sick, sick, sick!” I’m disgusted.

If you live or are traveling in the areas where these were found, please ask around to see if anyone you know has any information about the sicko who did this. If someone knows anything, have them call the game commission at 1-888-PGC-WILD or 1-888-PGC-HUNT.

Game commission posterThe Appalachian Trail is a nearly 2,200-mile-long footpath that crosses through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. According to the National Park Service, dogs must be on a leash on the 40% of the trail that uses National Park Service-administered land.

You might want to forward this article to any of your friends with dogs. Hopefully this is an isolated incident in this one area only. But who knows?

That makes me furious! Not only endangering the lives of dogs but all wildlife, what a horrible death that could cause. I can’t imagine what kind of evil person would do such a thing.

Hope they find that idiot. Best punishment would be the old Testament “Eye for an Eye” Force feed them to him/her.

Thank you, Chuck! This is, as already said, EVIL, SICK, SADISTIC, and DEMENTED. Such behavior is beyond my comprehension. I certainly hope that the Pennsylvania authorities track down the person or people who inserted the hooks into the treats and left them. Torture seems the most appropriate opening punishment for the culprits. 😠😡 Thanks for this extremely important warning, Chuck! 🙂 Safe, fish-hook-free travels! 🙂

If caught they should be made to eat the treats!

Definitely reinforces the concept of keep your dog on a leash and under control! Hope they find the perp(s).

Unbelievable. Your article is worth sharing and getting the word out to be diligent. Pets find enough natural things to eat that can kill them (my dog fell sick to Salmon Poisoning here in Puget Sound to the tune of $15,000-with pet insurance paying a fair amount!) To me, it doesn’t compute that harming defenseless animals along the trail is something that an outdoors lover would do.
