Traveling in an RV offers the ultimate freedom—no hotel check-ins, restful sleep in your own bed on wheels, and the ability to cook your meals anywhere. But with that freedom comes the responsibility of managing your waste, and that’s where RV dump stations come into play. Whether you’re a seasoned RVer or just starting out, you need to know how to find RV dump stations while traveling.
Below is a list of resources for finding RV dump stations along your travels.
Why do RVers need dump stations?
Using an RV dump station is essential for maintaining your vehicle’s sanitation and ensuring a pleasant journey. Here are a few reasons why you might need to empty tanks while traveling:
• Waste management. Your RV’s holding tanks for black water (toilet waste) and gray water (sinks and showers) need to be emptied regularly to avoid unpleasant odors and potential tank overflow.
• Boondock and more. If you boondock in your RV or camp in a place that doesn’t offer on-site waste dump stations, you’ll need to find a location that has one.
• Less weight. Moving down the highway with empty holding tanks means your rig weighs less and you may get better gas mileage.
Benefits of using a dump station
Using a dedicated RV dump station offers several advantages:
• Convenience. Many dump stations are conveniently located at campgrounds, truck stops, and highway rest areas.
• Sanitation. Dump stations provide a clean and controlled environment for waste disposal, reducing the risk of contamination.
• Peace of mind. Knowing you’ve properly disposed of waste means you can travel worry-free, without concerns about unpleasant smells or spills.
Costs
While some dump stations are free, others may charge a fee, typically ranging from $5 to $25. Factors that influence the cost include location, the amenities provided, and whether you’re a guest at a particular campground or RV park.
How to find RV dump stations
There are many great tools to help you find RV dump stations, no matter where you roam. Here are a few favorites:
• RV Dump Stations. RV Dump Stations is a comprehensive directory of dump stations across North America. You can search by state or province and get detailed information about each location.
• Sanidumps.com. Another excellent resource, Sanidumps.com, offers a searchable database of dump stations. It also provides tips and resources for RVers.
• RV Dump Sites. RV Dump Sites offers a map-based interface, making it easy to locate dump stations near your current location or along your route.
• RV Parky. This app offers a wealth of information about RV parks, rest areas, and dump stations.
• AllStays. Known for its extensive database of RV-related locations, AllStays includes dump stations in its listings.
• GasBuddy. While primarily a gas price finder, GasBuddy can also help locate truck stops that often have dump stations.
Tips for using dump stations
• Plan ahead. Before you hit the road, map out potential dump stations along your route.
• Be prepared. Carry necessary supplies like rubber gloves, a sewer hose, rinsing hose, sanitizing wipes, and tank treatment. We wipe down water faucet handles with sanitizing wipes both before and after dumping, and always wear gloves during the process!
• Follow the rules. Always follow the posted instructions at the dump station to ensure a smooth and hygienic process.
• Keep clean. Clean up after yourself to keep the station tidy for the next RVer.
