Pickup trucks continue to dominate the U.S. used-vehicle market, led once again by the Ford F-150, which remains the best-selling used vehicle in America.
The findings are based on an iSeeCars analysis of more than 9 million used vehicle sales from the 2020 through 2025 model years, examining sales shares nationally, by metro area, and by state.
New analysis shows the Ford F-150 holding onto its decades-long position at the top of the used-car sales rankings, underscoring the enduring demand for full-size pickups even as the broader automotive market evolves.
The so-called “Big Three” trucks—the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500—continue to occupy the top three spots nationally, maintaining a long-standing hierarchy that highlights the strength of the pickup segment in the resale market. Together, the three models account for a significant share of all used-vehicle transactions.
While trucks dominate the top tier, the Chevrolet Equinox ranks as the best-selling used vehicle that is not a pickup, coming in fourth overall. The Tesla Model 3 remains the best-selling electric vehicle in the used market, though it did not crack the overall top 20.
State-level data show subtle shifts beneath the surface. The Ford F-150 is the best-selling used vehicle in 28 states, down from 34 states two years ago, suggesting growing regional competition even as it remains the national leader. Analysts say this signals that while pickup trucks still rule the road, dominance is no longer guaranteed in every market.
Full-size trucks have spent decades as the most popular models in both the new and used vehicle segments. Yet Toyota’s Tacoma, which rules the midsize category, has already displaced the GMC Sierra 1500 and is closing in on the Ram 1500.
Used car sales
The overall ranking for popular used cars saw a few notable changes in 2025. The most significant came from the Chevrolet Malibu, which leapt 21 spots this year from 29th to 8th most popular used car. With Malibu production canceled in 2025, rental car agencies likely released these models into the used market and replaced them with sedans still in production.
The Nissan Rogue and Toyota Corolla also experienced upward moves in 2025, while the Toyota Camry, Tacoma, and RAV4 lost a bit of ground among the top models.
