With the average new pickup truck price in the $60,000 range, it’s no wonder truck buyers may shop the used market. And surveys show that while most buyers have switched “off” interest in electric vehicles, there’s a lot of interest in hybrid gas/electric rigs.
But if you’re shopping for a used hybrid truck, Consumer Reports says skip the Ford F-150 Hybrid. These Ford-made rigs get some seriously sad reviews.
Ford F-150 Hybrid on list of 60 “don’t buys”
Ford’s F-150 Hybrid model years 2021-2022 made a dubious list. They appear on the Consumer Reports list of 60 used vehicles it recommends you DON’T buy. The evaluation outfit builds its ranking on data from many sources. That includes its own “Annual Auto Surveys” obtained from owners.
Many owners are down-to-earth, in-the-trenches folks. They know exactly what’s hit them—and their wallets. On the list of 60 bad buys, those Ford F-150 Hybrids turn up with a “worse than average reliability” rating when compared to competitors.
Why the bad news?
So what’s the bad news about the F-150 Hybrid? Consumer Reports gives up to 100 possible points in rating each vehicle. The Fords in question turned up only five points out of those possible 100. In a horse race, it’s called “dead last.”
The problems cited by owners are powertrain and hybrid battery issues. F-150 owners have reported complete failure of the truck’s battery—a super-expensive repair issue. They also complain about drivetrain vibrations and, of all things, coolant leaks.
Not the only bad Ford pony on the list
Consumer Reports says skip the F-150 Hybrid. But that’s not the only Ford product that made it into this “hall of shame” list. CR says these other units are also “skip overs”:
- 2021 Ford Super Duty F-250
- 2021 Ford Escape
- 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid
- 2020 Ford Mustang
- 2017-2019 Ford Expedition

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 It seems EVERYONE MUST have a truck. The vehicles on the roads here in East Tennessee seem to be about 1/3 trucks. I have not noticed how they are powered, but not many are sitting on the side of the road awaiting a tow (so maybe few, if any, hybrids). Thanks for the warning. Five out of 100 must be a record for futility. I wonder if Ford can craft a marketing campaign highlighting its record-setting performance, but keep mum regarding what the record is. 🤔😯 Thanks again, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
I didn’t need Consumer Reports to tell me to stay away from hybrid trucks.
