Californians once again have the opportunity to enjoy the state’s natural beauty without the barrier of entry fees, thanks to the restoration of the Library Parks Pass Program.
This program allows residents with valid library cards to check out a State Parks pass from their local library. This pass will grant them single-vehicle entry to more than 200 state parks, beaches, and recreation areas.
California State Parks library program overview
The California State Library Parks Pass program, originally cut due to budget constraints, has been reinstated through December 2025 following a dedicated grassroots campaign.
The program’s supporters, including the California State Parks Foundation, rallied more than 5,000 letters to legislators to secure funding. Consequently, the California legislature allocated $6.75 million in the upcoming budget to sustain the program, which Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to approve.
Accessibility and benefits
Rachel Norton, the executive director of the California State Parks Foundation, praised the program’s restoration, highlighting its role in promoting a healthier and more equitable California. Norton emphasized that admission and parking fees often deter low-income families from visiting state parks, depriving them of the health benefits, educational opportunities, and recreational activities these spaces provide.
“Admission and parking fees can act as barriers for Californians wanting to visit the state’s boundless natural wonders,” Norton said. “This program is critical to ensuring all Californians, regardless of income, have the chance to experience these benefits.”
Program popularity and usage
The program has been widely embraced, with more than 33,000 park passes distributed across 1,100 public libraries. According to a survey by the California State Parks Foundation, the cost of entry was previously a significant deterrent for many, especially those from lower-income households and the BIPOC community. The survey revealed that 90% of respondents now plan to visit state parks over seven times a year, thanks to the Parks Pass program.
A good thing
The California State Parks’ Library Parks Pass Program not only makes state parks more accessible but also supports the broader goals of promoting public health, education, and equal opportunity for all.
By funding this program, California continues to ensure that its natural treasures are enjoyed by all its residents. For more information about the program and a list of participating parks, residents can visit their local library or check online resources.

So now it will only cost you the excessive California gas taxes to get you to each state park….imho
Thank you, Gail! 🙂 Hmm, … interesting. Seems a good idea for state taxpayers to get benefits in return for timely payment of state taxes. Thanks again, have a great weekend, and safe travels! 🙂
