Needing a laugh? Me, too! That’s why I just had to share this collection of the funniest animal photos for the past ten years.
Over the past decade, wildlife photographers have captured animals in moments that look surprisingly human. Many of the most memorable images come from the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards. It’s a competition founded in 2015 by photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam.
The awards celebrate humorous wildlife moments while also promoting conservation awareness. According to the organizers, the competition has grown into one of the world’s most popular wildlife photo contests. It attracts thousands of entries each year.
Why photos resonate
Wildlife often provides the best unscripted entertainment on the road. These award-winning photos capture that sense of surprise. They remind us that animals can appear mischievous, clumsy, dramatic, or downright relatable, especially when caught at exactly the right moment.
The standout funny animal photos

The 2024 overall winner may be one of the funniest wildlife photos I’ve ever seen. Marchetti captured a red squirrel halfway into a hole in a tree trunk. It looks as though the animal is hopelessly stuck.
In reality, the squirrel was simply entering the hollow, but the split-second timing created this zany image. Discover Wildlife and Nikon both highlighted the photo as the overall winner of the 2024 Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards.

This 2022 overall winner shows a lion cub losing its grip while descending a tree in the Serengeti. The cub’s awkward position makes it look like a cartoon character caught mid-fall.
Forbes reported that the image won both the overall competition and the Creatures of the Land category, proving that even future kings of the savanna can have an embarrassing moment.

A western grey kangaroo appears to be rocking out with an invisible guitar, complete with the perfect performance pose.
This image was voted the funniest photo of the 2023 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards. It is easy to imagine this kangaroo headlining an outback music festival.

One of the most-talked-about winners from 2020 features a turtle whose flipper is positioned in a way that looks suspiciously like a rude gesture.
This image was selected from more than 7,000 entries and became one of the competition’s most memorable winners.

This owl understands packing up after a getaway

Every RVer who has packed up camp before sunrise can relate to this owl. The bird’s expression looks exactly like someone facing a Monday morning after a weekend getaway. It’s no wonder so many people instantly connect with this owl.

This photo turns the food chain upside down. Instead of an eagle hunting a fish, the fish appears to be chasing the eagle.
This photo was a category winner from the 2024 awards, praising the absurd role reversal.

Anyone who has tried backing an RV into a tight campsite will appreciate this bird. The tern’s landing looks like a crash landing.
The image won the bird category in the 2024 awards and became a favorite for its perfect timing.

This 2020 highly commended image shows a fox cub and a shrew in a position that looks like an intense conversation. I think the shrew is presenting his case as to why the fox should look elsewhere for lunch. It seems like a fairytale illustration from the Brothers Grimm.
Why so funny?
The humor in many of the award-winning photos usually comes from timing. Wildlife photographers may spend hours waiting for a shot, and then a fraction of a second creates a one-of-a-kind image. (Note: No AI-generated or edited images are allowed in the yearly contest.)
If you’d like to try humor photography, here are some of the most common themes to consider:
- Expressions that resemble human emotions
- Animals caught in awkward positions
- Unexpected interactions between species
- Perfectly timed action shots
- Moments that suggest a funny backstory
Conservation
While all of these photos are entertaining, the competition has a serious purpose. The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards were created to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting natural habitats. The best part is that the laughter comes from real moments in the wild. No staging, no props, just animals being wonderfully unpredictable. It’s humor combined with a conservation mission, and that’s something to smile about!
I gave an RV-themed caption to the photo at the head of this article: “I can’t watch when he backs up the RV!”
