I may be a little late to this party. Before adopting my current canine companion, Bodie, last Christmas, I had been dogless for nearly three years. Until then, I had never even heard of Himalayan yak cheese chews. But if you have a dog that loves to chew, these things are a huge game-changer.
Not only are yak cheese chews a healthier alternative to rawhide and plastic or nylon chews that can shed small pieces, but they also don’t get slimy, they’re virtually odorless, they last an incredibly long time, and—most importantly—dogs absolutely love them.
What I especially like about Himalayan yak cheese chews

• Practically odorless, unlike many other chew treats such as pig’s ears.
• Made with just three all-natural ingredients: yak milk, lime, and salt.
• Long, long, LONG lasting. Each stick keeps Bodie occupied for more than two weeks (although he is a small dog).
• Fully digestible, lactose-free, grain-free, gluten-free, chemical-free, preservative-free, and mess-free. (The curing process removes the lactose from the yak milk.)
• A great option for dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies to chicken, beef, pork, or grains.
• Naturally high in protein and calcium.
TIP: Good to the last bite
When the chew gets down to a small nub, don’t throw it away. Soak it in warm water for about 10 minutes, then microwave it for about a minute. It will puff up into a crunchy cheese treat that your dog will love. Just be sure to let it cool completely before serving.
If you have a Trader Joe’s nearby, I’ve found it has the best prices on Himalayan yak chews. If not, they’re readily available on Amazon.
