For Pete’s sake… Here’s a great reminder to be sure you know the height of your RV. It’s also a reminder to pay attention to warning signs about obstacles on the road ahead. It’s also a reminder to avoid being stupid.
Watch the video at the bottom of this article to see what can happen if you ignore both warning signs and common sense.
In this case in Needles, California, a Class C motorhome approaches the very low 8-foot and infamous Needles Underpass. It’s on one of the main roads connecting the north and south sides of the desert community.
There are numerous signs (warning and detour) starting a half mile up the road. Even with all the precautions the city has put in place to prevent the carnage, there are still people who test the underpass’s huge protection barrier, and lose.
This RVer didn’t pay attention to signs, and he ended up paying a price — by causing a substantial repair bill to fix the damage from when he banged into the warning underpass protection barrier.
The moral of this story: Know the exact height of your RV and if you question whether you can fit through a low passage, don’t be stupid by trying to squeeze through. The driver of this RV didn’t do that.

Smart layout… stop sign and guard beam before the bridge.
Stupid driver… oblivious to the hazard.
It was a long time before they put that beam in.
That person deserved all the damage he caused to his RV. It wasn’t even close to being high enough to get under.
I wonder what his insurance company had to say.
I think they might say one word, CANCELLED.
WOW,didn’t even pull over to see what damage he did. Better hope it doesn’t start raining.
Driver probably dropped his phone too.
Here’s your sign…. 🤣
It can be absolutely amazing how many people are so oblivious to such limitations when driving larger vehicles. I retired from UPS some years back and I remember a fellow driver that was one such person. He had to pass through a gate at one of his delivery stops each day. His usual truck would pass easily under the very large heating pipe that crossed over that gate. One day, while his regular truck was under repair, he ran his larger replacement delivery truck into that pipe and did a lot of damage to the roof. You would think that would be enough to make him more aware but three days later he did exactly the same thing while driving his replacement rental box van. Incredible.
My neighbor borrowed a class C from one of his co-workers to make a trip to Winnipeg MB Canada. On leaving the zoo he took the road which leads to a low overpass – cleaned the AC off the roof. This was about 30 yrs ago now and he was not aware of – or able to convert the metric system used in Cn.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Thank you, RV Travel, for the demonstration of how not to drive an RV. Have a great week and safe travels!
As that comedian says. “Here’s your sign!” Use a RV gps with height tracker.
This place is very entertaining. This is a constant problem. So much so there is a fb page dedicated to the underpass with live feed.
And just like that. AirBnb had a Brand New Customer!
Exactly why we use an RV GPS. We volunteer as campground hosts at a state park and historic site. At least once a year someone using a map app ignores the several warning signs and attempts to drive under the 12’ railroad trestle in the park.
I would of guessed a 50% markup as so many RV’s are still on the parking lot from 2022, 2023 and 2024. At least on I-35 E in DFW.
