Class A RV left in pieces after tow job goes wrong

A family set out for a relaxing Easter weekend at Lake Powell, taking their big Class A motorhome along the Utah-Arizona border. But what started as a simple outing turned into a lesson in what not to do when your rig gets stuck in the sand. The real trouble came not from getting stuck—but from the attempt to get unstuck.

Good Sams figure brilliantly in the motorhome tow gone bad

Evidently a couple of would-be Good Samaritans offered to help the stuck-in-a-rut motorhomer. Hitch up those pickups, boys! Ready! Set! Pull! And—the Class A’s front cap is brilliantly removed from the motorhome chassis.

Lesson 1: Watch out for loose sand at the beach.

Lesson 2: Just because somebody has a pickup and a chain doesn’t mean they’re a good, free alternative to professional tow service, if you skipped Lesson 1.

Finally, here’s another case of a big Class A motorhome stuck in sand. This one was safely pulled out—by a guy with a green rope and an SUV. This was decidedly NOT a case of a motorhome tow gone bad.

Russ and Tiña went from childhood tent camping to RVing in the 1980s when the ground got too hard. They've been tutored in the ways of RVing (and RV repair) by a series of rigs, from truck campers, to a fifth-wheel, and several travel trailers. In addition to writing scores of articles on RVing topics, they've also taught college classes for folks new to RVing. They authored the book, RV Boondocking Basics.

Two pickups trying to pull the motor home. Too bad no one bothered to hook the chains to the frame of the MH.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! Yikes! I can hear one of my favorite college professors intone “penny wise and dollar foolish” as he observes this video. Should have awaited a real tow or winching. Have a great day and safe travels!

“My pickup truck can pick up anything!” “You didn’t tell me that you wanted the WHOLE thing unstuck.” Even Forest Gump knew better – knew better than to drive a Class A out on to SAND! No Physics taught in High School anymore, I guess.

There is a company that makes u tube videos for your entertainment
Called Matt’s Towing and recovery that works in that area. too bad they hadn’t seen any before they attempted to dislodge the A
Don’t people think before they drive?
Like driving thru water and engine quits.Did they think at all?
And now they want insurance to pay!

Ah yes, good ol’ Lone Rock Beach at Lake Powell.

We were thinking about boondocking there last year but when we looked it over in the Jeep, we passed. Between the underfoot conditions and the slope, the reward just wasnt worth the risk. Instead, we stayed at Wahweap Campground, did our laundry and moved on.

Lone Rock looks to be better suited to smaller rigs that are easier to tow and don’t need to be level.

We camp at Lone Rock Beach fairly often. With the water level so low, it is really sketchy to drive anywhere close to the beach in a motorhome or even pulling a trailer. Pretty much every time we go there, we see people getting towed out. We’ve also seen lots of bumpers torn off because people don’t know how to correctly hook up a tow rope. I feel sorry for the people with the motorhome. That looks like an expensive fix. It probably would have been worth the thousand bucks or so to get a professional to tow them out.

That’s worthy of a Robin William’s “RV” scene! Just ‘cuz you got money, don’t make you smart.

“Towing” the MH along the Utah-Arizona border. I don’t think so.

Thanks, Sally. Someone-who-shall-remain-nameless changed the wording after I proofed it. Sheesh! I’ve corrected it. Have a great day! 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
