Awhile back we asked RVtravel.com readers whether they had ever loaned their RV to a friend or family member. Thirteen percent of the more than 2,000 readers who responded said that, yes, they had done that. Some reported they had done so repeatedly.
We just came across one of the comments to the survey, which included the photo you see here. This is probably evidence of why 87 percent of those who responded said they had never loaned their RV out! Here’s the comment.
“I was outside of Missoula a few years back and there had been some excitement the night before. Some snowbirds let their kids borrow their motorhome and when they got a flat tire on I-90, they drove on the rim for MILES throwing sparks until the whole rig went up.”
so,we all started as pro’s ?
I can’t imagine someone with a driver’s license knowingly driving this rig with a flat down to the rim.
I also cannot image the parents who should know this kid was an idiot to let him take the rig out of
the driveway. This is outrageous. How many people could this kid have killed on the road.
There is no common sense here.
I don’t know if you realize this but this is the very thing started the Carr fire here in Redding Ca last year. It was a trailer tire that blew and the occupants of the truck pulling it did not realize it until it had sparked the brush along the road. They tried in vain to get help but it was too late and it burned so many houses and killed some people. So very sad……
Our trailer doesn’t leave our yard – unless I’M towing it! Just sayin’ . . .
I believe that in the modern RV there are just too many systems to be lending the unit to a novice. I don’t have all that money tied up in an RV to be making insurance claims and, as we all know, sitting in an RV repair shop, for goodness knows how long, waiting for it to be fixed.
My insurance says Immediate family members only.
Grandchildren very disappointed when they couldn’t take my truck camper for the weekend music concert.
Last thing I wanted to let them use.
Blame the insurance company.
We would not have purchased our RV unless we thought our kids would also use it. In fact, they went with us when we went RV shopping. (Bottom line, however, was that the person writing the check always has the final decision.) We are not full timers and just feel the expense/depreciation justified the use it would get for just the two of us.
In all honesty, on many occasions we have had to call our son to come and “fix” the RV or talk us through something on the phone. Fortunately, he has a lot of common sense and good mechanical instincts. (Which obviously he didn’t get from his parents!)
Would Joint ownership help?
Guys, something I learned many years ago: Three things you never loan: Your tools, your girl, or your ride. You never know what condition it will be in when you get it back — IF you get it back!
It’ll buff out.
Great comment! LOL

Stupid is as stupid does. Reminds me of when my 21 year old was heating up her leftovers and the whole microwave started sparking. I asked what she was thinking and she said I didn’t know you can’t put tin foil in the microwave. I guess I really didn’t raise an Einstein.
Well, strangely enough, I have seen recommendations from at least one microwave manufacturer (Sharp) to put aluminum foil over some parts of food to shield it (i.e. tips of whole chicken wings). If you look at our combination microwave/convection oven in our motor home, it has what appears to be a metallic tray (the part that rotates). It was a head-scratcher to me….
And to think that these are the people who will be responsible for the future of our country. Sure glad that I won’t be around for when it does implode.
With respect to borrowing, loaning or leasing your RV to anyone. Many insurance companies will NOT honor a claim, should your RV be destroyed or seriously damaged.
Something to consider if you ever consider Loaning your RV to anyone, including your own children!
