What do you call it: a signal or a blinker?

“Honey, put your blinker on!” “Dear, you didn’t use your signal.” What is that thing called that you use to indicate whether you’re turning right or left while driving? Do you call it a signal? A blinker? Do you use both interchangeably? Do you call it something else?

We want to know! And if you answer “Something else,” well, you must leave a comment and tell us what that is. We bet some people call it some funny things. Is it a regional thing? Hmmm…

As always, thanks for voting.

Are there even any states where “blinkers” shows up on the written portion of the driving test?

I call it a turn signal now but was originally taught it was a directional.

I call it a turn signal but some folks in Maine call it a “blinka”.

Based on the way President Kennedy pronounced Cuba I guess in Massachusetts it would be “blinkar”. Lol

Signal or Blinker ? Who cares what it’s called, just USE IT !

I think it’s a very pricey option in Lindsay, Ontario Canada. Either that or many people have not been shown how to operate the signal

It’s probably the fact that when Daddy was teaching them how to drive on the tractor there wasn’t turn signals on the tractor. Also this time of the year it’s too cold to roll the window down to dry their nail polish. Lol

Using turn signals must be either too complicated or too difficult for many people.

In the trucking industry when a newbie trucker forgets to turn off the turn signal he’s told over the CB “driver you’re going to run out of blinker fluid”, best comeback I ever heard was “ no sir this is a newer truck that has electrical signals, it doesn’t use fluid to operate the signals”. Lol

I have to give credit to some who will wait until they’re making their turn to indicate their intentions, at least they don’t totally ignore their intentions by almost stopping before their turn.

What ever you want to call it, just wish more people would use it!!!!

I call it a turn signal or signal light. UNFORTUNATELY there are too many drivers who don’t know how to use them including those that turn them on halfway through the turn. Maybe if I never use them I can sell the vehicle as brand new!!

We call it a “tink-tonker”. Because that’s the sound it makes when it’s on. Or at least it used to make that sound in older cars.

What ever you call it, I can report that it must be an option on cars sold in Florida,
New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
For the record, I call it a turn signal, with the four ways, a hazard signal/ flasher.

I always think the person not signaling a turn must be driving a pre 1955 vehicle since turn signals have been required by federal law since then. Or maybe their mind stopped functioning before 1955. Either way they are a hazard to other drivers. I just followed a driver who remembered to use their turn signal as they were in the middle of their turn, love that too.

The turn signal is what you use to turn on the blinker… 🙂

I once had an older English sports car, and they called it a “traffficator.”

Indicator. It’s an Indicator because it indicates intention. That’s my take anyhow.

Do you mean that thingy on the steering column that washes my windshield and turns on my bright lights every time I turn a corner? Yep, I’m old school where every function had its own switch.
