Fans of roadside Americana visiting the Southwest, take note. The video below from ABC 15 TV in Arizona highlights seven strange road trip landmarks you can spot while traveling through the Grand Canyon state.
Some are well-known and others more obscure, but you’re sure to find all of them entertaining, amusing and/or intriguing. In some cases, they are all that’s left from classic roadside Americana attractions of old.
7 weird Arizona road trip landmarks
Watch the video to get a quick look at each of these, mostly kitschy, road trip landmarks, and look for them during your Arizona travels.
#1 Diamond Back Bridge, Tucson: Cross the road between the fangs of this overpass.
#2 Frog Rock, Congress: This 16-foot tall pile of stacked rocks on Hwy 89 has been painted like a frog since 1928.
#3 Twin Arrows: The two super-sized arrows stuck in the ground are all that’s left of a classic Route 66 trading post.
#4 Wickenburg Jail Tree: Wickenburg: From 1863 to 1890 the tree served as the town’s jail with outlaws being chained to its sturdy trunk.
#5 Hobo Joe, Buckeye: The statue of Hobo Joe is all that remains of a now-defunct chain restaurant of the same name.
#6 Jackrabbit Trading Post, Joseph: A great photo op awaits on this giant saddled jackrabbit.
#7 Area 66, Golden Valley: A private residence shaped like a giant golf ball.

Area 66 is in YUCCA, AZ. 25 miles from Golden Valley.
#2 Frog Rock, Congress: This 16-foot tall pile of stacked rocks on Hwy 89 has been painted like a frog since 1928.
Obviously stacked up back when you could do this without going to jail.
Thank you, Cheri! 🙂 Interesting stuff. We may get back into Arizona on our return from Alaska next summer, presuming it is next summer. If we do, it will be a hit-and-run attack, so unlikely to see any of these. But, … you never know. 🙂 Thanks again, have a great week, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
