Today’s thought
“In November, the trees are standing all sticks and bones. Without their leaves, how lovely they are, spreading their arms like dancers. They know it is time to be still.” —Cynthia Rylant
Need an excuse to celebrate? Today is National Sandwich Day! (More on that below.)
On this day in history: 1911 – Chevrolet officially enters the automobile market in competition with the Ford Model T.

Backroad or offroad RVing: Don’t get stuck!
By Russ and Tiña De Maris
One of the great joys of RVing is to get closer to nature and farther away from the noise and problems of “civilization.” Of course, getting away from civilization can also mean getting away from paved roads—and, at times, that can put you in the way of getting your rig stuck.
We can vouch for the truth of this maxim: The best way to get your RV unstuck is not to get stuck in the first place. If you’re heading away from civilization and pavement, use plenty of foresight—use your eyes, without the RV, wherever possible. Scouting ahead on foot or with a tow vehicle (preferably one equipped with four-wheel drive) can help you identify hazards. Mud is obviously something to steer clear of, but check the terrain carefully. It may be good today while it’s dry, but what if rain comes? Will that perfect “spot” suddenly become a mire? Here’s what you need to know.

Quick tip
Add longevity to your roof vent lids
One clever RVer sprayed his roof vent lids with automotive clear coat. He did it so that dirt and dust wouldn’t stick to the vents, but found that it added nearly a decade of longevity to the lids. You can get it in a spray can, like this from Amazon.

Trivia
As of the most recent U.S. Census data (in 2024), the median age of an American is approximately 39 years. This number has steadily increased over the past few decades, reflecting an aging population due to factors such as lower birth rates and increased life expectancy. The last time it was measured, in 2020, the median age was 38.8 years.

It is great to see Riley still competing in agility trials. I wish him and his offspring lots of success. I love watching agility trials. They demonstrate skills for both the dog and the trainer.
In the trivia at the end, you do mean the MEDIAN age was 38.8 in 2020 and not life expectancy, correct???
good catch, Kelly!
Mother is 95 and I’m 70. We both sure beat that life expectancy!!
Oops! Thanks, Kelly. It’s been fixed. (I think when I proofed it, I was distracted by the dog jumping over the bar in the photo directly below that.🙄) Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
Depending on the type of plastic, the paint may actually harm the plastic. Or in the case of HDPE, it will not adhere to the surface and peel off.
Yep. Better investment is a proper vent cover. It not only protects the lid from UV and hail, etc., but also allows ventilation during rain.
Love ‘Today’s thought’.
DO NOT purchase the Ultimate Guide to Boondocking. I can only believe AI created it. I purchased through Amazon, then requested a return, when I found out how terrible it was. They gave me a credit and told me not to bother returning it. I’m going to use it to start campfires!
Add longevity to your roof vent lids
You can also apply one of the many films (X-Pel is one) to the plastic vent covers, or headlamp lens. Most films reduce the UV effects on plastic, thereby increasing the lifespan of the plastic. Or in the case of headlamps…preventing the awful yellowing of the lens.
3M paint protection film is readily available, including on Amazon. Unlike painting, it can’t damage the surface you apply it to. It’s touted to last up to 10 years, and if/when it needs replacement, you just peel it off, clean the surface with alcohol, and apply new film. I’m using it on our headlights and after more than two years, it looks the same as the day I installed it.
If you have a skylight, window, or other cover with minor cracking, you can use the film to seal the surface temporarily, which can be lifesaver if you have to wait for parts.
