Public health concerns about RV waste in LA streets

The more than 2,300 people living in RVs within the LA city limits are illegally dumping human waste into the streets due to a lack of dump stations. City council wants to hire a company to help pump waste out of these RVs which they hope would cost $25 per RV dump. The motion proposed would also give vouchers to the homeless living in RVs to use the dump stations, both public and private.

Camping World has purchased TheHouse.com, a large E-Commerce website selling bikes, sailboats, skateboards, snowboards and other outdoor sporting gear. The two companies will still maintain distinct brands but will give Camping World a bolt in their omni channeled approach in the industry.

Deadline approaches to get discounted senior national park pass

The price of the senior national parks pass is going from $10 to $80 on August 28th. Seniors still have a limited time to get the pass for $10. The rise in price is due to a congressional mandate that passed in December stating the senior pass must be the same as the annual America-The-Beautiful pass. Passes can be purchased through August 28th at any recreational day-use area [that requires the pass] with proof of age and residency. They can also be purchased online here.
Road at Lassen National Park finally clear of snow

After four months of work the road through Lassen Volcanic National Park is finally clear of all snow. The opening of CA 89, the road running through the park, set a record for the latest it has ever been opened. The winter’s heavy snowpack is what caused the delay, and there is still 10 feet of snow around the perimeter of the main parking lot.
Michigan to offer “Meteors & S’mores” in state parks during Perseid meteor showers

Participating Michigan state parks are staying open later than their usual hours to welcome visitors watching the Perseid meteor showers on August 11th-12th. Parks suggest bringing blankets, bug spray, seating and snacks, but will provide campfires with fixings for S’mores.
Bear euthanized in CO after jumping on tent

A bear pounced on a tent at Aspen Acres campground in Rye, CO, injuring a woman inside. The bear was euthanized Wednesday morning because it was a repeat offender. Park officials warn not to keep food in tents, cars, or unattended outdoors at campsite. Keep food in bear-safe containers or hanging by tree at least 10-feet off the ground.
KOA celebrates “Christmas in July”

A KOA in Minneapolis has thrown a “Christmas in July” celebration with inflatable Santas, wreaths made out of paper plates, Christmas lights, and graham-cracker “gingerbread” houses. “Christmas” was inspired by the hot 90 degree temperatures and thinking fondly of cooler weather. Christmas stories were read aloud to the children, and an ice cream social with candy-cane toppings was enjoyed.
Wild horse dies in campground after eating improperly stored dog food

A wild horse has died in a campground at the Assateague Island National Seashore after eating a large amount of dog food which was left out in a campground. The food caused a blockage which ruptured the horses’ intestines. The National Park Service says all food, including pet foods, must be properly stored.
