Thieves steal ID to snag RV from a national RV dealer

A pair of enterprising crooks got the better of a major U.S. RV dealer in a new RV sales transaction. Eureka, Missouri, police are on the lookout for two characters who drove away from Blue Compass RV with a brand-new travel trailer last August, after presenting a phony ID to obtain a loan on the unit. The two scammed a new RV, but it took some ingenuity.

Two scammed a new RV, even after loan initially denied

A 31-year old man from Las Vegas, and a 40-year-old woman from Boulder City, Nebraska, both unnamed, went on the RV shopping trip. When it came time to close the deal on a 2025 Forest River Cherokee, the man presented his Nevada driver license. For some reason, the loan was denied.

What’s the next best thing? Get the helper, whom the man described as his “aunt,” to proffer her ID. That California driver license was good enough for the loan, and the man then cut a $1,190.68 check for the down payment.

It was all good, until the real “buyer” called in

It all seemed good to Blue Compass. Good until October rolled around and the phone rang. The female caller said that she had never approved the loan granted to the man and his “aunty.” Apparently the conniving buyer woman either used a phony, or stolen, driver license. A little more looking revealed that the bank account on which the down payment check was written was closed in November.

Police began a search for the crooks, and their ill-gotten gains on wheels. They got a solid lead when sheriff’s deputies found the fraudulently obtained RV in a campground up in Indiana. Those law enforcement officers also found other stolen vehicles at the site. No doubt the RV park owner was upset when it was found that the pair had paid their site rental—with a stolen credit card.

Two scammed a new RV. But as of last week, Eureka Police still hadn’t caught up with the scamming couple. They are hoping to level charges against them for fraud.
