Thousands of Forest River fifth wheels recalled over bad wiring

Forest River is facing another self-acknowledged “manufacturing error.” This time nearly 3,000 fifth wheels over five model years are being called back after the company recognized workers did improper wiring that could lead to fires.

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2021-2025 Impression fifth wheel travel trailers. The solar charge line, front LED hitch light, and the pass-thru light may have been wired to the incorrect mini breaker. Wires connected to the incorrect mini breaker could melt and short, increasing the risk of a fire. All told, 2,809 units may be affected.

Bad wiring remedy

Dealers will correct the wiring, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 18, 2024. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-367-3314. Forest River’s number for this recall is 83-1862.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to nhtsa.gov.

Wiring issue background

Two issues raised the recall. The solar charge line, front LED hitch light and the pass-thru light, might be inconsistently wired to a 50AMP mini-breaker. The solar controller may have the incorrect gauge hardness wires.

In the first issue, the wires connected to the improper mini-breaker could potentially melt, causing a short. This could potentially lead to a fire, property damage and/or personal injury. The company lists “Description of the cause” as a Manufacturing error.

The company says it has not received any warranty reports on this issue, but found the problem during a routine Corporate Standards Inspection of the manufacturing plant on October 30. Forest River discovered that certain 12V wiring may be “inconstantly wired.”
