Dreaming of a simple camper setup without the headaches of a big build? In his video, Kevin from the Budget Travel Guy channel shares his experience after eight years of trial, error, and travel in a minivan camper. His third minivan conversion focuses on keeping things easy, organized, and fully powered for comfort on the road.
Below, he explains every decision, product, and detail that makes life in a compact space not just doable but enjoyable. Yes, your minivan camper can have all the traditional RV amenities without a traditional RV conversion build!
For his project, Kevin set three clear goals:
- No-build approach for easy setup and changes.
- Everything stays accessible and in logical places—no more digging for essentials.
- Maximize free space, with a permanent bed that never needs to transform.
He wanted the comfort of always having a real bed and enough room to sit with a guest for meals or conversation, rain or shine.
The layout keeps both front seats, with the passenger seat turned around. The seating creates a lounge area between the seats and the bed. This works well, especially when weather keeps everyone inside. A storage crate doubles as a footstool and also stays ready for daily gear.
Crates under the bed now hold clothes and food, sitting side-by-side so nothing gets buried. With this setup, each crate is reachable from inside or through side doors, unlike previous builds where gear would get lost under the bed.
The van floor, with seats removed, offers underfloor storage perfect for tools or rarely used items.
Essential gear to enhance comfort
Even small gadgets make van life easier. Kevin swears by:
- A rechargeable fan for cool, quiet nights
- Rechargeable bug zapper to handle mosquitoes and gnats at bedtime
- Binoculars and night vision goggles for exploring, with quick access from the storage crate
Each item solves daily problems and helps keep living simple.
Plumbing and power
Daily showers matter when hiking or exploring all day, especially in humid weather. Instead of struggling with heavy 5-gallon jugs, several small water containers totaling 8-15 gallons are used. This makes refills quick and lifting safer. The Ivation Rechargeable Shower provides a pressurized stream anywhere it’s needed.
This setup runs on two OKMO 280Ah batteries, which hold more than 7,000 watt-hours—well beyond what most portable stations manage. A third can be added if needed, bringing the total storage above 10,000 watt-hours.
On top sits a BougeRV 300W solar panel, enough to charge the system even on overcast days and more than twice what’s typical for minivans. This power keeps appliances running without worry.
The SetPower 12V fridge/freezer stores entire cases of drinks plus food, ending the hassle of constantly moving stuff. For cooking, the Nuwave Induction Cooktop and a microwave oven handle cooking tasks fast—no more propane, no fighting the wind.
A remote for the inverter lets Kevin turn on A/C power from wherever he’s seated, with the press of a button. This runs the microwave or extra devices without crawling into awkward corners—making life inside much easier.
Privacy, bed, toilet
Privacy isn’t something to leave to chance. For the windshield, Kevin skips unreliable gas station window shades and uses his own curtain system. This keeps the inside hidden and cooler on sunny days.
A strong foldout bed frame rated for 750 pounds pairs with a 4-inch mattress. The setup sleeps as well as at home, and flipping the mattress gives fast access to the battery system below.
There’s a full flush camping toilet with carry bag. Most days it’s not needed, but for storms, sickness, or late arrivals, it offers peace of mind and comfort.
Plans and ideas for future upgrades (Build 3.1)
Next steps include:
- A shore power plug for charging house batteries at friends’ homes
- Safe battery charging from the van’s alternator while driving (avoiding unreliable market options)
- A diesel heater tucked under the floor, adding warmth for winter without losing storage
