Campgrounds light up during spooky season, and RV sites are no exception.
In the video at the end of this post, brought to you by Sun Outdoors, you can discover three budget-friendly projects that RVers Jason and Sheena use on their Airstream. The goal is fun décor that travels well and looks great at night. The couple also proves that holiday decorating on the road does not have to be expensive. With a few supplies, anyone can add flair to a campsite and join the fun many RVers enjoy each October.
Common items used for all three projects:
- Glue and scissors
- Black felt
- LED tea lights
- Twine
- Drill with a hole saw (for the pumpkin) Most of these tools are already in an RV toolkit or cost only a few dollars.
Project #1: Mummy lanterns from jars
Turn any glass jar into a glowing mummy. Mason jars, pickle jars, or leftovers from the pantry work well.
You will need:
- Glass jar
- Black felt
- Glue and scissors
- Medical gauze
- LED tea lights (one per jar)
How to make the mummy lanterns:
- Wrap the jar tightly with gauze to create a mummy face.
- Trim the end and tuck it in to secure the wrap.
- Cut felt into simple eyes, then glue them to the gauze.
- Place an LED tealight inside. It looks cute by day and glows at night.
Project #2: Hanging ghosts
These light, breezy ghosts look great at each end of an RV or near a picnic table.
You will need:
- Old white sheet (or buy a twin flat sheet)
- Round plastic bowl with a smooth top
- Twine
- LED tealight
- Scissors
- Black felt for faces
Plan on three to four ghosts from one sheet.
To make the hanging ghosts:
- Fold the sheet in half, then into quarters, and cut to create smaller pieces.
- Find the center of each piece and snip a small hole for the head.
- Drill a hole in the top of the bowl, thread twine through, then flip it and tie.
- Drape the sheet over the bowl.
- Cut eyes and a mouth from felt, glue on, and add a tea light under the fabric. Masking tape helps position the light if needed.
Project #3: Creepy mouse house pumpkins
This one gets messy but delivers big laughs.
You will need:
- Pumpkin
- Drill with a hole saw
- Plastic critters like skeleton mice
How to make the mouse house pumpkins:
- Use the hole saw to cut several openings. The seeds spilling out add to the haunted look.
- Pose mice so they peek through holes, crawl out, or look like they are chatting.
Safety tips for all your DIY decor
- Use small LED lights everywhere, never real candles.
- Secure hanging ghosts so that the wind does not carry them off.
- Clean up pumpkin scraps to deter wildlife.
Displaying your creations
Set mummy lanterns on a picnic table. Hang ghosts from each end of the RV with twine. Place the mouse house pumpkin at the site entrance to greet visitors. Let all glue dry before moving pieces.
