Expert evaluates pros and cons of work camping

By Cheri Sicard
In the video below, we join Steve Turtle, a former full-time work camper who now hires work campers. If you have been curious about working while traveling in your RV, this video will give you a glimpse into the lifestyle as Steve talks about four jobs he and his wife, Jill, have held.

Steve says not all work camping jobs are created equally. If you are considering this lifestyle, his insights could prove invaluable.

In the video, Steve evaluates each of the work camping jobs the couple has done over the last five years according to:

• Time commitment

• Non-monetary compensation

• Pay

• Hours

• Duties

• Pros and cons

Watch the video to get Steve and Jill’s experiences at each of these venues:

#1 Riverview RV Park in Lake Ozark, Missouri: Steve and Jill worked 10 hours per week, at the same time and on the same days, for free complete hookups, free laundry, and other living perks. They stayed here for nine months.

#2 Mill Bridge Village Camp Resort, Ronks, Pennsylvania: The couple stayed here for 18 months. They received all of the above perks (under #1), plus free propane in the winter and a paycheck. They even received a completion bonus for finishing out the seasons. The couple worked 25 hours each week.

#3 John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir Army Corps of Engineers Campground, Boynton, Virginia: This was a two-month winter volunteer camping position. The only compensation was that it gave the couple a place to stay close to where they needed to be, and a sense of civic pride.

#4 Camp Riverview, Concan, Texas: This was a five-month, full-time paid work camping job performing a variety of duties on various projects.
