Yellowstone National Park and the USGS Volcanoes U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are seeking witnesses and information regarding the hydrothermal explosion event that took place in Yellowstone’s Biscuit Basin on July 23, 2024.
Here’s who can help:
• People who were in Biscuit Basin or the surrounding area who directly observed the explosion.
• People who have photos or videos of Black Diamond Pool, Black Opal Pool, or Wall Pool during the period of July 16–July 23.
If you are in either of these groups and would like to help, please contact the Yellowstone Geology Program by email at yell_geology@nps.gov.
Hydrothermal explosions are common, but seldom witnessed. By sharing your observations and media, witnesses can directly contribute to important scientific research on this underappreciated geologic hazard.
Watch the video below to get an idea of the size of the explosion and the race by park visitors in the area to escape the unexpected and threatening situation.

Thank you, RV Travel! 🙂 No, sorry, I wasn’t there. Good luck to the park service in their information gathering! Thanks again, have a grest day, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
I’m curious what these ‘officials’ need this for. Really. Maybe find some indication that this was about to happen? Otherwise, it’s pretty much just nature at work. You can’t predict this stuff. Not everything is “Old Faithful”.
