Zion National Park announces winter schedule changes

As Zion National Park moves into its winter season, the National Park Service (NPS) has outlined significant changes to shuttle operations and campground access. Visitors planning to visit over Thanksgiving weekend and throughout the winter months should expect larger crowds and potential delays.

The NPS has warned that shuttle stations, park entrances, and trailheads are likely to experience long lines, while traffic in both Springdale and park areas may become congested.

Shuttle service for the fall season will end on Sunday, Dec. 1. From Dec. 2 to Dec. 19, visitors will be able to drive their private vehicles along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. However, due to limited parking, there is a chance that certain areas will be temporarily closed when parking lots fill up. The NPS recommends considering alternative parking or adjusting plans if necessary.

Between Dec. 20 and Dec. 29, the park will implement its holiday shuttle service. During this period, private vehicles will not be allowed on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. If the Zion Canyon Visitor Center parking area is full, visitors should use available parking in Springdale. This shuttle service will end on Dec. 29, after which private vehicles can access the scenic drive once again starting Dec. 30. Shuttle services are set to return in spring 2025, with exact dates to be confirmed.

Regarding campgrounds, Watchman Campground will stay open throughout the year, with reservations accessible via www.recreation.gov. Lava Point Campground has closed for the winter, while South Campground is temporarily unavailable due to ongoing construction.

The Zion Canyon Visitor Center will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center will operate from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., then reopen from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The hours of the Zion Canyon Wilderness Desk will be adjusted during Thanksgiving weekend, with service from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Beginning Dec. 1, regular hours will resume.
