The 2026 Keystone Cougar Half-Ton 26RES is built as a compact but comfortable fifth wheel. It’s worth a look, especially if you want roomy rear living space without hauling a huge rig.
Behind the walls
Keystone engineered the 26RES around their HyperCore™ composite wall construction and HyperDeck™ water-resistant flooring. Both are designed to resist rot and keep the shell lighter and stiffer than traditional wood-laminate builds.
The package also includes Climate Guard insulation and wiring innovations which the company says are aimed at long-term durability.

Interior and living space
Walking into the 26RES feels bright and fresh. This fifth wheel RV feels much larger than I anticipated. My eyes were drawn first to the windows. Windows seem to fill the walls along the back and camper side (sans curtains or cornices), allowing the space to be filled with light. (Don’t worry. Black-out shades are also included.)
The single, tall slide opens up the main living zone, and the rear L-shaped sectional faces the entertainment center. There is no kitchen island or peninsula, so the living area feels comfortable, not cramped. I was happy to see that even with the slide retracted, there was access to the refrigerator and bathroom.
Kitchen
The kitchen is compact but thoughtfully laid out. You get a 10.4 cu. ft. refrigerator, a propane oven and cooktop, and a microwave. (My personal preference is a combination micro/convection oven, instead.)
The pivoting entertainment center hides additional pantry space. (I’m not a big fan of the “hidden pantry,” but admit it provides extra storage space.) There are plenty of kitchen cupboards and drawers for all of your pots, pans, utensils, linens, and more.
Countertop prep space may seem a bit limited for some RVers, but the transformable dining table could easily serve as additional food prep area, if needed.
Speaking of the table, I’m fascinated by the mechanics. You can maneuver the tabletop so that it faces the kitchen or rotates to face the rear of the fifth wheel. RVers can configure the table to fit their lifestyle, and I appreciate that feature.
Living room
The rear L-sectional gives the space a comfortable, lounge-like feel. The TV pivots out from the wall to allow viewing from just about anywhere in the area. The tall slide allows more headroom and a less boxy or closed-in feel.
Keystone equips the area with a 5,500 BTU electric fireplace (thermostat and remote) and dimmable overhead lighting. There are also charging ports on either side of the flip-up-for-storage sofa. (There isn’t really a surface to put your phone or tablet as it charges, which seems awkward to me. However, the space under the flip-up sofa is a big bonus.)
Several overhead cabinets mirror the L-shaped sectional and provide generous space for games, blankets, and whatever else you want to store in this area.
Bath
The full bath is straightforward and functional. There is adequate space around the commode. The sink features a decent countertop for toiletries, as well as three drawers for more.
I like the spacious medicine cabinet, towel hooks, and extra storage cabinet above the toilet. The shower includes built-in cubbies and an upgraded showerhead. The skylight brings extra light into the area, which is nice. Oh, and there’s an on-demand water heater, which I also really like.
Bedroom
The front bedroom is set up with an available king bed, dual wardrobes and nightstands, and washer/dryer prep. Keystone includes dual USB charging ports and above-bed storage space, as well. I would have liked to see individual reading lights, but I’m happy that the arrangement allows RVers to comfortably sit up in bed to read.
If you opt for a washer/dryer installation, you’ll lose valuable drawer space, which is definitely something to keep in mind. I really appreciate the solid door that provides good separation from the living area for privacy. The opposing windows will bring in a nice cross-breeze, as well.
Overall take
The 2026 Cougar 26RES is a smart pick if you want rear-living comfort and modern interior touches. Could the 26RES be your next RV?

Half ton = tail wagging the dog
Half ton towable? Yes a half ton with a decent engine will be able to tow this rig, but after adding water, supplies, people, etc., this unit will be grossly overloaded. That will be unsafe, however if someone gets into an accident you can be 100% sure your insurance will be invalidated and that will spell a disaster!
Sad that this false advertising is allowed!
I agree with the comments about half ton – definitely would not use anything below a 3/4 ton but I am confused with the layout and the text referring to one slide but the picture at the beginning of the article also has a bedroom slide (2 slides). Not sure if the pic is correct or the text is correct.
Hi, Mikey. Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn’t noticed the discrepancy when I proofed the post the other day. However, looking at the Keystone website, it does show the two slideouts on the page for this model. I’m pretty sure that’s a different model, however, since the floor plan only shows one slideout. NO 1/2-ton should be towing a 31′ fifth wheel with a GVWR over 10,000#! Yeah, you might be able to tow it in a travel trailer and you can add air bags to reduce “squat”. But can you stop it in heavy traffic or slow it on a 6% downgrade without burning up the brakes (1/2-tons don’t have diesel exhaust brakes!)? What about the rear axle loading with the driver, 3 passengers, and all their “toys” in the crew cab, plus a 200# fifth wheel hitch and a 100# generator and fuel in the bed? And what is the GCWR and the frontal cross-sectional area (wind resistance) of a 12-13′ tall fiver? Anyone towing this Cougar with a 1/2-ton should be pulled over and ticketed for “gross negligence”!
