The governor of Illinois has announced that Lake Michigan will be renamed Lake Illinois. The news release announcing the change, some of which is reprinted below, was taken seriously by many news outlets. We fell for it at first, but, folks, it’s a joke.
Illinois governor says Lake Michigan is renamed
Governor Pritzker announced last Friday that Lake Michigan was no more, rather, it is now Lake Illinois. A video to social media outlet X shows the governor making the announcement.
“The world’s finest geographers, experts who study the Earth’s natural environment, have concluded a decades-long council and determined that a Great Lake deserves to be named after a great state.” “So today, I’m issuing a proclamation declaring that hereinafter, Lake Michigan shall be known as Lake Illinois. The proclamation has been forwarded to Google to ensure the world’s maps reflect this momentous change.”
Not to be left out of the ability to annex new properties to the Prairie State, Governor Pritzker added this: “In addition, the recent announcement that to protect the homeland, the United States will be purchasing Greenland … Illinois will now be annexing Green Bay to protect itself against enemies, foreign and domestic.”
Okay, now that you have read the information from a press release, we’ll stress again that this is a practical joke.

Well this silliness begs the question of who named the lake in the first place and who has the authority to change it? Maybe I’d like to rename it Lake North Dakota! (This would be after ND annexed MN, WI and IL – Ha! )! Bah Hum bug to this nonsense!!

Only the National Board on Geographic Names can change any of these official names, including the “Gulf of Mexico”. That change will last about as long as the change of “french fries” to “American fries” did and is just as ridiculous!

I think we need to give the States of Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana a chance to chime in here first. On the other hand, or to say: other border, Lake Michigan is contiguous with Lake Huron, with much of it being in Canada along with Erie, Ontario and Superior. If I were Canadian, I may think they should be considered the Canadian Lakes. Maybe use that old left over name, The Gulfs of Mexico – gulfs or golfs??

Illinois is nearly bankrupt and has a lot of issues. They should focus on fixing their mess rather than wasting time lampooning someone else’s decisions.
