If you want to stay in a scenic campground, it often takes a lot of effort and advanced planning to book a site. And if you have your heart set on a specific scenic campsite within a scenic campground, it’s even tougher. Popular destinations—especially in national and state parks—can book up months in advance. But the good news is that some campgrounds are beautiful all around, meaning nearly every site offers a great view.
For some RVers, the scenery is a top priority, and they go the extra mile to secure a picturesque spot. Others take a more flexible approach, booking whatever is available and appreciating the beauty around them. Then there are those who find it too challenging to plan ahead, relying on last-minute openings or traveling in the off-season to improve their chances.
Of course, “scenic” means different things to different people. Some prefer a lakeside or beachfront view, while others enjoy the rugged beauty of the mountains or a peaceful forest setting. Then there are those who find charm in rolling farmland or wide-open desert landscapes. No matter your preference, the setting can make a big difference in your overall camping experience.
How about you? How often do you stay at a scenic location with your RV? Do you always make an effort to book a site with a view, or do other factors—like availability, cost, or convenience—take priority?

We rarely stay in campgrounds in our fulltime travels. We look for our scenic places off the grid. As we travel around the country, we typically don’t decide where we’re going to stay until after 2pm that day. Then we start looking at websites like freecampsites.net & others to see what is around us. If there is nothing close by, we will stay at a Walmart type of store or in the lot of a permanently closed business. Over the last 15 years we have also found many nice boondocking sites that we have posted on freecampsites.net. We’ve never had a problem finding a site in our 15 years of fulltime travel.
Even snowbirding, we are near the Gila mountains, so that is scenic. In the summer, the Canadian Rockies.
While not staying at a campground with a view, we do stay in an area where we can find with interesting areas and avoid tourist traps.
We stay at parks in scenic areas but don’t pay extra for the few spots with premium views.
We live in a scenic location on a lake shore in North Texas year round .
Our Tiffin motorhome is comfortable and cozy!
Depends on what you consider scenic. Currently in a very nice campground that used to be an avocado/mango orchard. Just left a gravel yard with a wonderful water view and great sunsets. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Scenic locations are our main criteria when deciding where we want to stay for a day, week, or month. It’s all about the view, which is probably why we very rarely stay in large rv parks looking at the back end of someone else’s rv.
Thank you for the question, RV Travel! Seems half the time. State parks and COE campgrounds usually are scenic. Lots of private campgrounds aren’t particularly so. Have a great week and safe travels!
I’m not stopping anywhere without a swell view. Some rest areas do have them.
I think I only stayed at one in Wyoming because the campground wasn’t where it was supposed to be according to the campsites list. Or…I was too tired and missed the turn..
