I was aghast when I opened our renewal policy for our RV. Our RV insurance had gone up from a little over $3,000 a year to $4,932! And it was set to auto-pay on January 9th! Well, Progressive, Happy New Year to you, too! Our car and truck insurance was pending payment at a higher premium, also.
I contacted our insurance agent hoping they could help find a cheaper policy somewhere— Geico, Hartford, Allstate, Farmers—I didn’t care. Anyone that would not be charging RV highway robbery!
Our agent did even better than going through the hassle of getting a new carrier. They negotiated with Progressive to bring down the cost based on customer loyalty and the decreasing value of our motorhome. Yup, the sad fact is that, unlike a house, an RV depreciates at a rather rapid rate. We also drive it fewer days in a year now.
Our new RV insurance rate is $2,248 with a lower deductible. The car and truck insurance went down $200 a year, too.
I could not have done this on my own (I tried) and can only be grateful for a dedicated agent to work with. So my advice is to have an insurance agent and call them about rates. If you don’t have an insurance agent, find one and remember to be diligent about reading the new policy coverage. Good luck!

I shop all of our insurance every two years. One hint, NEVER tell them your current premium. Why would you tell them the target they need to beat? Make them work to provide you the best they can offer and do not be afraid to tell them if you have better offers.
Did the same last year. Most likely will have to do it again this upcoming renewal time
Property & liability insurance skyrocketed everywhere. Even small mutual (non-profit) insurers with no customers in disaster regions jumped rates. By the way, keep in mind that your domicile state has something to do with it. With States Rights, each state & territory has its own insurance regulatory bureaucracy. Your ‘insurer’ is actually a holding company for many smaller companies. What appears to be happening is the subsidiary companies in unaffected areas are building warchests to prop up losses in disaster areas. Or just grabbing profits while the grabbing is good.
Last year my Arizona Progressive policy went from approximately $3200 to over a little over $5000 when I upgraded from a 2019 Entegra Cornerstone to a 2023 Newmar London Aire. I got in touch with a recommended Montana Progressive agent and was shocked when I was told the cost would be back to around $3200. Same insurance company, different agent. Don’t ask me why, but it pays to shop around.
Where in Montana is this agent located? His / her name, please?
The average cost increase across the board for all companies for Auto and RV insurance is 23.5%. These are the same companies which received the largest tax giveaway ever in 2017 and are going to get another this year. How is that working for you?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ron, please provide “source “ of the information.
Thank.you, Nanci! Excellent advice. I will do so. Happy new year and safe travels!
I have Progressive in Ca & my policy went down about $200 & still have the same benefits including if totaled I’ll get back what I paid for it! Have had the Progressive agent for 8 years!

As with many, my insurance rate went up. But, last year i had hail damage to both my truck and travel trailer totalling over 15,000. Dollars, i paid 200.00 deductible on the trailer and my truck deductible of 500.00 was waived , my insurance went up 200.00 dollars!! i also got my trailer and truck fixed in about 3 weeks thanks to my insurance company’s help. For me, the 200.00 increase is worth it for a company that took care of me! Company Hartford
I use USAA . So far so good and the premium is not near as bad as Progressive or the other thieves.
USAA doesn’t insure motorhomes.

Another great idea Nanci, thanks for the tip!
Nancy, did you negotiate a lower insured value of your rig?
We have Progressive, had a $19k new roof claim when our class A was 11 mo. old. Our premiums have held steady with very nominal increases each year. We are not FT but spend 3.5-6 months/year in our rig. After 5.5 years, we are on our 6th windshield chip (to be repaired tomorrow morning for $138) we have always paid for these out of our own pockets. Yes it’s covered, but it’s a claim. Folks need to realize, it’s the number of claims, not the amount of the claim that matters. We save our insurance for catastrophes. This is one of the best ways to keep premiums under control.
Just went through it….switched to Progressive which was $1000 less than current full time insurer for Class A and Toad. Same coverage and we carry elevated liability as required by our Umbrella coverage. Interesting fact…we are going from full time to not full time..6 mos or less late in February…and the full time rate was less than $200 more than not full time.
I hate insurance but it’s a necessary evil! We use FMCA as our agent.
