Tip of the Day

Prevent mold with these simple tricks to cut down humidity inside your RV

By Gail Marsh
Ah, winter. It’s so cozy and warm when you’re cuddled up inside your RV, especially when the outside temps are frigid. Well, that cozy feeling is sure to cool when you begin to notice water droplets forming on the inside of your RV windows. That’s excess humidity and it is not your friend! When the warm, moist air from inside your rig hits the cold window glass, moisture forms. If that moisture builds up, the water droplets join together to form little rivers of wetness that will run down into the windowsill and from there into the wall. If left to continue, it’s a good bet mold will develop. Nobody wants that!

Here are simple RV hacks and tricks to help cut down on the humidity inside your RV this winter.

What do you know about the Vroom slideout mechanism? My Schwintek is broken

Dear Dave,
What do you know about the Vroom slideout system that replaces the less-than-reliable Lippert Schwintek system currently in a lot of RVs? We have a 2022 Alliance Avenue 32RLS with about a year-and-a-half of camping in the rig, which includes three months in an RV resort in Tucson, AZ. Our bedroom slide is broken and the culprit is a flimsy plastic slide piece that holds the gear into the gear track. I look forward to your thoughts. Thanks from Colorado. —Richard, 2022 Alliance Avenue 32RLS

The Kenai is the largest of Scout’s four fiberglass truck camper models, so know that if this is too much, you can go smaller.

RVers’ day touring the incredible Avenue of the Giants

By Nanci Dixon
The Avenue of the Giants is a 32-mile scenic drive winding around the enormous redwood trees. It stretches from Scotia, California, in the north, to Garberville, California, to the south, paralleling Hwy. 101, the Redwood Coast Highway. Our first five miles on the Avenue of the Giants were in our 40’ motorhome towing a car. Not for the faint of heart, but the Avenue of the Giants Campground owner had assured me that was the best way to get to the campground. And what a nicely laid-out and kept-up campground it was! Continue reading about the Giants.

Quick Tip

Roof ladder storage safety tips

If your RV is equipped with a roof access ladder it’s always a temptation to use it to store extra stuff on. Not a bad idea, but just make sure that whatever you hang on the ladder doesn’t obstruct your taillights. Drivers behind you can unwittingly get a bit too close if they don’t see your intentions clearly signaled. And make sure that the items are well secured. A step ladder bouncing down the freeway can create a whole lot of trouble.

• 10 percent say their current RV is too big for them.
• 71 percent make their bed every morning (and 6 percent never make their bed!).
• 49 percent say they or their partner are very capable of fixing things that go wrong in the RV, and that they can fix almost everything.

Recipe of the Day

Chinese Chicken Lettuce Wraps

by Estelle Anderson from Desert Hot Springs, CA

These yummy chicken lettuce wraps are tops in flavor and texture. Ground chicken lightens up the wraps, but thanks to lime juice, soy sauce, diced bell pepper, and other seasonings, these are full of flavor. We love the crunchy texture that water chestnuts added to the lettuce wraps. They’re easy on the waistline and a tasty snack.

Trivia

Did you know that Southern California’s Joshua Tree National Park has a VIP campground? Does that sound unfair to the rest of us? It shouldn’t. The “VIP” label refers to “Volunteers in Parks”. The campground is a hidden gem used by volunteer individuals and groups of the national park.

6 in 1 shampoo has nothing on a good ol’ bar of Ivory soap. When a kid Mom used it in the bath, hand sink, kitchen sink, wash hair, clean grimy garage hands, it floated so you could find it and a bit shaved off the bar even ran the submarine that I got with Cheerios box tops – we even carved animals out of it. When Mom ran out of laundry soap she would shave pieces off into the wringer washer Wife blames it for the loss of my hair, but I do get a clean scalp.

Years ago we adopted an apple head chihuahua who had a knack for locking us out of our car. Then I adopted another chihuahua a few years later who did the same thing. Then I adopted a pom chi last year who does the same thing. We did learn from the first chi not to leave the keys on the seat less you get locked out of your car. Luckily for us we always carry spares and keep them on us. Chihuahuas are dogs that are always thinking of ways to keep us on our toes.
