On this day in history: 1863 – United States President Abraham Lincoln proclaims November 26 as a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated annually on the final Thursday of November. Following the Franksgiving controversy from 1939 to 1941, it has been observed on the fourth Thursday in 1942 and subsequent years.

Holiday decorations for the RVer: These fit into a shoebox!

I have been searching the internet to get some ideas for holiday decorations for the RVer. I saw page after page of lights and trees and pillows and rugs and – and – and… The truth is, I have no dedicated space to put holiday decorations, especially for multiple holidays. One page suggested you mail your decorations back home – or someplace – after you were done. Really?
There may be space for a very small box, such as a plastic shoe container, in our “garage” storage area. That is all the space I am willing to give up. So that is my challenge. Here’s the decor that I can fit.

OK to run generator with rig plugged in during storage?

Dear Dave,
I keep my rig connected to my 50 amp after winterizing it. My tech says that is OK. I also exercise my generator over the winter. Can I start the gen without issues while keeping it connected to my 50 amp, or should I disconnect first? —Dennis, 2014 Winnebago Sightseer 33C Read Dave’s answer.

Leaky gutters? What to check
If your rig is parked and leveled but condensation or water from even light rains oozes over the top of the gutters and down the side of your rig, don’t immediately condemn the manufacturer. Time to get out the ladder and check the gutters. They may have debris in them that prevents the water from running where it needs to. Or you may find a gap between two pieces of gutter that needs to be filled in. If water still runs down the side of your rig after those fixes, go ahead and blame the manufacturer.

Trivia
TV dinners were invented because of Thanksgiving leftovers! In 1953, the food company Swanson overestimated how much turkey they’d need for Thanksgiving and ended up with 260 tons of extra turkey. To solve the problem, a Swanson salesman came up with the idea of packaging the turkey with sides like cornbread stuffing and peas in compartmentalized trays—creating the first-ever frozen TV dinner! Leaky gutters? … The motorhomes I known have a drain hole in the gutters about midway along each side, so you get drips down the side of the RV even when the awning is extended.
RE: quick tip on leaky gutters… we (and most experienced RVers it seems) do not perfectly level our RVs. Pretty much all the experienced people are just barely off-level with the utility side lower – and often to the back corner. This slight off-level is too little to damage the frig, but roof A/Cs drain away from the entrance side, and waste tanks drain slightly better. The slight tip to the back helps slide roofs to better drain.
