In a recent RVtravel.com reader poll, a significant portion of RVers said they’ve used their RVs not just for travel, but also as a spare bedroom for guests when at home.
The question posed to readers was: “Does your RV serve as a spare guest room?”
Of the more than 1,100 respondents:
• 9% said “Yes” — they use their RV this way regularly.
• 36% said “Yes, but rarely.”
• 54% answered “No.”
Use beyond travel
RVtravel.com founder and publisher Chuck Woodbury said the results reflect the flexibility RVs can offer beyond travel. “We hear it often from our readers,” he said. “RVs can be more than just recreational vehicles. They’re guest suites, offices, even quiet retreats parked right in the driveway.”
The findings also carry relevance for local zoning officials, who in some areas restrict the use of RVs on residential properties, even for occasional guest stays.

Don’t allow anyone in a camper to stay overnight in Biloxi Mississippi on your own private property. Really! The city has a “Guest House” Ordinance that prohibits using a camper overnight. I found out the hard way that they will selectively enforce it. I believe the guest house ordnance, LDO 23-4-4-C(8)(D)(4) is unconstitutionally broad because it is not narrowly drafted to accomplish any legislative purpose because it criminalizes routine non-criminal activity like letting your kids stay in a pop-up camper in the back yard or allowing visiting relatives/friends/guests staying in a RV overnight on your private property, not even for a night! PROHIBITED! Boycott Biloxi.
Thank you for calling attention to the survey results, RV Travel! We are well off the road and, when our RV is stored, it is too. I have used it as a spot to rest while working on the farm near it. Sometimes, I clean it just hang out at it. But, we have never put anyone up in it. Have a great week and safe travels!
