Like dinosaurs? Go to Utah!

For RV travelers with a sense of wonder, Vernal, Utah—known as Dinosaurland—isn’t just a scenic stop along your journey; it’s one of the richest windows into prehistory in the American West. Here, rugged red-rock landscapes conceal fossils that tell the story of life from the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras.

RVers of all ages will love this area, but those with young children or grandchildren along will likely enjoy their visits the most as they observe the youngsters’ wide-eyed fascination with the fossils and footprints of the ancient reptiles.

The big finds: Utah’s dinosaur stars

Utah’s layered geology makes it one of the most complete fossil records on Earth, spanning nearly the entire Mesozoic Era. That’s why paleontologists and travelers alike keep returning to its quarries and outcrops. Among the headline dinosaurs you might learn about on-site are:

Allosaurus – Utah’s state fossil, often called the “Lion of the Jurassic.”
Utahraptor – the largest raptor ever discovered, far bigger than its Hollywood cousins.
Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus – towering plant-eaters from the Morrison Formation.
Camarasaurus, Diplodocus, and Parasaurolophus – iconic giants that once roamed ancient floodplains.

What makes Utah so fossil-rich? Its mix of ancient coastal plains, rapid burial in river sediments, and millions of years of uplift and erosion mean bones were both preserved and revealed for modern eyes to find.

Must-sees in the area

Dinosaur National Monument

Just a short drive from town, this 210,000-acre monument delivers an unforgettable “Wall of Bones,” at The Quarry Exhibit Hall, where visitors can see and even touch more than 1,500 dinosaur fossils embedded in a cliff face. This world-famous Carnegie Dinosaur Quarry allows you to connect directly with the remains of creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago. The park’s primitive campground offers spectacular stargazing.

Hot air balloon looks like a dinosaur
During Dinosaur Days in August, even the hot air balloons celebrate the ancient inhabitants of the area.

Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum

Located in downtown Vernal, this museum brings the prehistoric past to life with life-size models, interactive exhibits, and fossil displays that make it ideal for curious kids or adults.

Red Fleet State Park

Just minutes from your RV site, hikers can find well-preserved Jurassic-era footprints at the Dinosaur Trackway—a chance to literally walk where giants once tread.

And for a bit of quirky local flavor, keep an eye out for Dinah the Pink Dinosaur, Vernal’s 40-foot fiberglass ambassador welcoming travelers to town.

From the physical thrill of hiking fossil trackways to the educational delight of museum exhibits, this corner of Utah turns an ordinary road trip into a journey through deep time—all easily accessible from your RV doorstep.
