For RV travelers with a sense of wonder, Vernal, Utah—known as Dinosaurland—isn’t just a scenic stop along your journey; it’s one of the richest windows into prehistory in the American West. Here, rugged red-rock landscapes conceal fossils that tell the story of life from the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras.
RVers of all ages will love this area, but those with young children or grandchildren along will likely enjoy their visits the most as they observe the youngsters’ wide-eyed fascination with the fossils and footprints of the ancient reptiles.
The big finds: Utah’s dinosaur stars
Utah’s layered geology makes it one of the most complete fossil records on Earth, spanning nearly the entire Mesozoic Era. That’s why paleontologists and travelers alike keep returning to its quarries and outcrops. Among the headline dinosaurs you might learn about on-site are:
• Allosaurus – Utah’s state fossil, often called the “Lion of the Jurassic.”
• Utahraptor – the largest raptor ever discovered, far bigger than its Hollywood cousins.
• Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus – towering plant-eaters from the Morrison Formation.
• Camarasaurus, Diplodocus, and Parasaurolophus – iconic giants that once roamed ancient floodplains.
What makes Utah so fossil-rich? Its mix of ancient coastal plains, rapid burial in river sediments, and millions of years of uplift and erosion mean bones were both preserved and revealed for modern eyes to find.
