Truck camper stolen with man inside—crook won’t yield
Just after 6:20 p.m. on July 23, a thief stole a truck with a camper attached from a property in Adelanto, California. The catch? There was a man sleeping inside the camper when it was taken.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect—identified as 49-year-old Omar Hernandez of Lynwood—ignored deputies trying to stop him and led them on a high-speed chase. The pursuit traveled from Adelanto into Hesperia, with the sheriff’s helicopter, Aviation 40K, assisting from the air.
The wild ride ended at the busy intersection of Highway 395 and Main Street when the stolen truck plowed into four vehicles. After the crash, Hernandez tried to run but was caught by deputies shortly after.
Amazingly, the man inside the camper was found unharmed, despite sleeping through part of the chase and the crash itself.
Not just theft—kidnapping, too
Hernandez now faces serious charges, including vehicle theft, kidnapping, and evading law enforcement. He’s currently in custody at the High Desert Detention Center.
