Some say everything’s bigger in Texas. From the looks of the picture, this little character isn’t real big. But what’s big in Texas is this: Texas will release its billionth fish this Wednesday, July 31.
To be big on fishing, Texas will release its billionth fish
A billion fish? Let’s get it into perspective. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department folks are big on fishing. To be big on fishing, you have to have a lot of fish. To that end, the agency has been stocking saltwater fish into Texas bays for more than 40 years to revitalize historic fisheries and speed up the recovery of overfished stocks.

The billionth fish to be released is indeed a small thing, in a big way. The billionth hatchery-produced fish is just a fingerling—a miniscule one- to two-inch fish.
But the diminutive darling will be one of the most sought-after game fish in the state, a red drum. When they grow up, the little red drums will make a big plate of dinner.
The whole affair may prove to be a public relations piscatorial pop-gun when it rolls out at Seidler’s Boat Ramp on Christmas Bay in Freeport. Texas will release its billionth fish. The small fry with a big number will take to the bay shortly after 9:00 a.m.
