Thief steals occupied motorhome in RV park, injures several people

It sounds more like a scene lifted from an American crime drama, but it played out in Canada. Mounties responding to a weapons complaint in Lloydminster ended up chasing their suspect into a crowded campground. Before it was over, a motorhome was stolen. The RV hijacker crashed the rig, not before wounding “many” civilians and a Mountie.

Adding a dash of surrealism to the already strange case, it played out in Lloydminster. Do you Americans ask, “Which province?” Well, two, actually. It seems the line between Alberta and Saskatchewan splits the city in two. In this case, the Weaver Park Campground lies on the Saskatchewan side of the border.

Started with a weapons issue

Last Saturday night, a Lloydminster Crime Reduction Unit officer was checking a weapons issue. It’s possible that the subject of his investigation didn’t take too kindly to the matter, as in the end, the Mountie ended up chasing a man right into the campground.

RV hijacker crashed the rig

Once in the campground, the suspect hijacked an occupied motorhome. He then tried to use the rig as a weapon against the Mountie. In return, the Mountie fired a weapon toward the crook.

Along the way the hijacked motorhome hit several other rigs—at least one winding up head-on into a tree. It’s not clear if that one could have been the stolen unit. In any event, the RV hijacker crashed the stolen rig, completely disabling it.

Canadian authorities are largely mum on the details. Reports indicate the Mountie was injured, as were “several” individuals. Some of them ended up in the hospital, although the Mountie himself received only minor injuries and was fit enough to get the cuffs on the hijacker. The hijacker was not injured, except possibly his pride.

The RCMP has been directed to perform an internal review of the matter “to gather a full account of how the incident played out, including police training, policy and response,” according to an official news release.

It will no doubt be a Canada Day weekend that won’t soon be forgotten.
