How to make a $10 DIY ‘Solo’-type stove from thrift store parts

By Cheri Sicard
If you love the idea of a Solo Stove smokeless fire pit but you don’t love the price tag that comes with this popular RV accessory, the video below from GreenShortz DIY is for you. It’s actually a remake of an earlier DIY “Solo” stove video they did with viewer-suggested improvements that include reusing thrift store materials instead of using cheap Chinese-made aluminum pots.

So they made the project even greener. They also incorporated several other viewer tips to make this project even easier than the first DIY “Solo” stove video.

Of course, that $10 price tag does not include the tools needed to make this project. But if you already have a well-outfitted shop, you probably have most, if not all, of what you need.

The video begins with a trip to some thrift stores to source materials. It took a couple of stops but our host found what he needed without too much trouble. (Neighborhood garage sales could also be good sources of supplies for this project.)

Watch the video to see how it all fits together, but our host picked up the side parts of a large steamer pot and a stainless steel mixing bowl that fit nicely inside the steamer.

Some L brackets on the bottom increase airflow and keep the stove off the ground.

Our host then cut out the center of the pot lid to mimic the rimmed edge of a commercial Solo Stove. Then he drilled holes for airflow around the base of the inner bowl.

Then came time to attach the legs and fasten the pots together.

A few finishing touches and it was time to light it up.

Again, watching the video will make it far easier to make this project as you can follow along step by step.

Aluminum has a pretty low melting point, I would be careful as to where I used something like this.
