What is the world’s largest filing cabinet?
At first glance, this oversized filing cabinet looks like something out of a surrealist painting. It’s a massive tower of mismatched metal drawers, welded together and standing firm against the Vermont sky. Officially known as the “File Under So. Co., Waiting for…,” this sculpture was created by artist Bren Alvarez in 2002.
The filing cabinet represents years of paperwork generated by delays in the construction of Burlington’s Southern Connector highway project. So yeah, there’s deep symbolism behind this massive structure of drawers, though most people just enjoy it for its whimsy.
Birds really do live inside the drawers
Here’s a fun fact: there are birds nesting inside the drawers of this filing cabinet. How cool is that? This towering structure isn’t just steel and paint—it’s become home to some of Burlington’s feathered residents.

That file cabinet JUST MAY hold the bills and correspondence that resulted, between me, the doctor, hospital, insurance company, and Medicare, for one of my hospital stays last year.
Actually, the tallest file cabinet sculpture at 65 ft is on the Di Rosa Contemporary Art Museum grounds in Napa California.
