Here’s some good news, RVers! Exciting developments are underway at Estrella Mountain Regional Park in Maricopa County, Arizona. Beginning February 3, 2025, the park will begin constructing a new campground. It’s designed to enhance the outdoor experience for visitors. Construction is slated to run through March 2027.
What to expect
The upcoming campground will feature 50 developed campsites. Each site will be equipped to provide a comfortable stay amid the natural beauty of the park.
In addition to the campsites, the project includes the construction of two restroom facilities complete with showers. This will ensure that guests have access to essential amenities during their visit.
Equestrian- and pet-friendly facilities
For equestrian enthusiasts, a fenced trailhead will be established, offering a secure area to prepare for horseback riding adventures. Pet owners will appreciate the addition of a shaded dog area, providing a comfortable space for their canine companions to relax.
Additional enhancements
The project also includes renovations to the Rainbow Valley Trailhead, aiming to improve access and usability for hikers. A new dump station will be available for RV users, and five covered sites are designated for park hosts, who play a crucial role in assisting visitors and maintaining the campground.
Temporary closures during construction
To facilitate these improvements, certain areas of the park will be temporarily closed. Starting February 3, 2025, 143rd Drive and Arena Drive will be closed. This will restrict access to the Rainbow Valley and Coldwater Trailheads, restrooms, and the associated parking lot. These closures are expected to last through March 2027. However, the trails will remain accessible from the Quail Trailhead, though parking there is limited.
Response to public interest
The decision to develop this campground stems from public feedback gathered during the 2016 update of the park’s master plan. Visitors expressed a strong desire for camping facilities within the park, particularly near the rodeo arena.
Maricopa County officials have responded to this interest by moving forward with the campground project, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities based on community input.
Estrella Mountain Regional Park
Established in 1954 as Maricopa County’s first regional park, Estrella Mountain Regional Park is a popular destination for snowbirding RVers. The park spans nearly 20,000 acres of desert and mountain terrain.
Estrella offers a variety of amenities. There are more than 33 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. You’ll also find a golf course, nature center, pollinator garden, and more.
The park includes the only 65-acre grassy picnic area within the county’s park system. This makes it a popular destination for both locals and visitors.

Wow, this is great news, plan to camp when it gets built
Wish they would build some developed campgrounds up north. The people who live here full time would like a place to camp out of the heat.

The Pentagon, the world’s largest office building, only took 16 months to build.
That was in “the old days”, Grumpy. It would take 16 months or more just to get the permits today, and that’s if the permits were hurried through.
Full timers will lock that place up solid.

That picture is also on the Estrella Mountain Regional Park Facebook page, dated 2015. Maybe there was a lake there 10 years ago. (I have no idea.)
