Canadian RV dealers threaten to cancel orders from U.S.

Last year was a tough year for the RV industry. With both wholesale and retail sales of new RVs down, particularly among motorhomes, there is pain all around. Now Canadian RV dealers, fed up with the thought of potentially paying tariffs on U.S.-built RVs, are beginning to cancel orders.

Dealers at show: Canada canceling U.S. RV orders

CTV News, a major Canadian media outlet, reported news that will doubtless trouble members of the RV Industry Association. Reporting on last weekend’s major RV show in London, Ontario, the outlet said, “Most dealers at this weekend’s RV Show in London plan to cancel all American-made orders if threatened tariffs proceed.”

While the potential of cancellations should worry American manufacturers, the reality is, some Canadian RV dealers have already killed orders. Andy Tomson, who owns the Can-Am RV dealership, told CTV, “Ourselves, we canceled $3 million in orders. Lots of dealers were similar.”

How much pain would RVIA manufacturers feel if all Canadian orders were scratched? Statistics indicate that 12% of the RVs that roll off American manufacturing lines are exported to Canada. While the RVIA has spun a bright future for 2025 sales, even a 10% market falloff would be disastrous to manufacturer bottom lines, and no doubt contribute to plenty of employee layoffs. Canada canceling U.S. RVs will hurt the industry, and people.

Will be hard to get a new RV if you’re a Canadian buyer

For Canadian RVers, the news of Canada canceling U.S. RV orders isn’t particularly great, either. Canadian RV manufacturers only produce 5% of RVs sold north of the U.S./Canada border. That may explain the high traffic and brisk sales at the London, Ontario, show. Dealers suggest Canadians are trying to beat the potential tariffs that the Canadian government says it will impose if the Trump administration imposes its own tariffs on Canadian imports.

Potential trade war

A potential trade war between the two neighboring countries is already creating plenty of anxiety. The RV industry is no doubt listening closely to warnings like the one that came from Don Ferguson, who owns the RV World dealership in St. Thomas. Ferguson told CTV, “We’ve told our manufacturers if the tariffs come in, don’t ship us any product that the U.S. tariffs apply. I mean our dollar is bad enough.”

The false narrative of this story in soooo many areas of the report is crazy. Not by Russ and Tina but by CTV and the Canadian sources.

1. How does a US import tarrif add costs to RVs exported to Canada? It doesn’t.
2. Canadian RV manufacturers can step up production to fill the void and create jobs in Canada…. winning for Canada.

Unless it is opposites day, Canada would have to add an import tarrif in order for tarrifs to add costs in Canada, not vise versa. Yikes, shooting yourself in the foot much?

I take exception to the title of this article – kick who while who’s down? You’ve opened a can of worms. Canada has been insulted every day since the start of this new US administration. A US trade deficit is NOT a subsidy (as most people know) – cut back on US oil imports from Canada and you’ve got a trade surplus!

If Canada was to pay it’s fair share of NATO, manage immigration and drug trafficking from that side of the border and boom, no trade war. Lots of solutions to the same problem. Only a fool would believe that T truly thinks Canada will become a state. Grab a glass of water and put your hair out.

These articles that create divisive comments and retatiatory comments, including from myself, is getting real tired. Almost as tired as TDS has gotten and especially when the T in TDS has an over 62% average approval on the top 4 issues according to Americans and seems to be getting right, albeit still somewhat ungracefully, but still getting it right on the issues that matter.

The article says that orders are being cancelled because of the looming trade war. That is utterly false. I am Canadian. The orders are being cancelled because the USA President is threating to force Canada to become its 51st state. Although we Canadians enjoy our American friends, and previously enjoyed travelling into the USA, we DO NOT want to become Americans. We are culturally very different and have very different priorities. I bought a new 2025 Forest River unit in November. Had I known that your President would be aggressing my country, I would have purchased a Canadian built or used unit instead. I had a big trip planned into the USA this July, but it’s cancelled.

I don’t blame you for cancelling your trip & you aren’t the first of our Canadian neighbors I have heard this from. Just know that a lot of your neighbors to the south are saddened by the way he has alienated one of the US’s greatest allies.

The worst part is, it’s not the American people who are causing this problem. It is just a few billionaires, and their sheep, who are now in power.
They are blaming Canada for the influx of immigrants and drugs coming here and they think imposing tariffs is the answer.
Making enemies by taxing our neighbors to the north and welcoming two of the biggest dictatorships with open arms.
These few people couldn’t care less about destroying our economy and making enemies. It doesn’t affect them at all.

I have to ask does anyone REALLY think it’s a US desire for Canada to be the 51st state?! Or does a particular individual throw out a comment as a negotiation tactic? No friends, a cost verses benefit analysis would determine it is not in the US’s best interest to annex Canada. Maybe, just maybe it was a comment to accelerate the departure of the Canadian PM and the ascension of one more friendly to the US? Yet some are losing their bowels over the needling of the US northern neighbors.

The taxpayer has no choice, they pick up the cost of government regardless of corporate contributions.

Companies move offshore and outsource to reduce the size of their contribution (taxes) and regulation. That kills manufacturing jobs while leaving the burden of government to the taxpayer which creates debt if unchecked.

To reduce that debt, you reduce expenses and collect from companies benefiting from U.S. trade via tariffs or taxes. Directly taxing outsourced items is called a tariff.

Regardless, you the taxpayer/consumer ultimately pay for government so we’re just arguing about the font, not the sentence. The debt simply can’t keep growing.

It’s not a threat. It’s the reality that RV prices may rise a lot more as a result of certain actions. (Think aluminum/steel/appliances from across the ocean). That quite obviously would lead to fewer purchases here. Stop being so political. It’s economics. Like these wonderfully built RVs aren’t expensive enough already. Strong and Proud are we too. Well, if the Canadian RV market consists of 95% American-made RVs, exactly who is it the dealers are hurting if they cancel orders from Elkhart and elsewhere in the U.S.? If Canadian currency is already in the toilet maybe they should be looking at Ottawa and their soon-departed PM then worrying about tariffs.

Leonard R.

Here is my Canadian perspective, for what it’s worth.

1) Canada must and will impose dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs if Trump imposes his. It is not an option.
2) The Canadian economy and our consumers will be hit harder than the US.
3) Prices on both sides of the border will go up for for imported/exported items.
4) Canadian travel has and will continue to decline to the US. My family alone has cancelled three trips to the US, and my 4 month stay next winter has been cancelled.
5) Canadians generally love America, but that does not mean we want to be part of it.
6) Hopefully the adults in both of our countries will make rational decisions.

In order:
1. I think the term reciprocal is becoming vogue, versus the retaliatory term. If we charge Canada exactly what Canada charges the USA, does that settle Canada’s fears?

2-6. Will be less important to discuss if we Canada go with #1.

Great game on Thursday night Leonard. Well played.

I totally support Canada, and I am embarrassed by how the US is treating it’s closest ally and best friend (though I think we’ve lost that distinction in the last month). US citizens behaved so badly in Canada during Covid that they had to close their borders to us. Which made it extremely difficult for me and cost me thousand’s of dollars, because I needed to be able to move and forth from Alaska to the Lower ’48. I’m afraid to move back to AK, because I’m afraid I’ll get stuck there again, as could easily happen. I’d move to Canada if they’d have me, but I don’t qualify. What I infer is that since only 5% of the RVs sold in Canada are manufactured in Canada, then the other 95% are manufactured in the USA. I kinda doubt all the orders will be cancelled. They will have nothing to sell.

I don’t understand why so many people here have to respond with divisive political statements? I thought this was a forum about RV’ing? After 4 years of daily reads I realize that I was wrong. Unsubscribed.
I will say however that when a leader of one country states many times they intend to take over another sovereign nation or independent country that would be considered an act of war especially when that sovereign nation has not threatened the other.

Relax Mia. Do you have any actual evidence of any SS checks going to Musk? Any evidence at all that he is misusing SS numbers for something nefarious? Please give us an example…. if you have anything at all to support your claim, I will be the first one in line to protest Musk with you. Grab some water, put out your hair, it will all be fine. Yikes you’re in deep.

LOL – there are already 30,000+ SS Employees PLUS all the IRS employees who have your SS number. I wouldn’t worry about Musk seeing it, but feel free to get another COVID-19 booster, it will help you.

So, a lot of Canadian RV sellers are going out of business because they won’t have anything to sell???? Does not sound very smart to me! But, maybe the Canadian Government will provide them and their employees free money to live on.

There are Canadian RV manufactures, who will appreciate the opportunity of increasing their annual production.

Bingo. The art of the deal. It makes one wonder all the TDS posters on here when they were buying their RV, they walked in the dealership and paid sticker price as it appears they are clueless about negotiating!!!

Friends don’t treat friends this way.

Canadian water bombers have helped fight wildfires in California.
Canadian utility workers have helped restore electricity after hurricanes Sandy and in Florida
Canada helped the United States rescue six American diplomats from Iran during the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Canadian government issued false passports to the Americans.

You can’t put a price on friendship. It’s priceless.
