The PetPhone lets your pet call you while you’re out—Yes, really

Pets aren’t just travel companions—they’re family.

Whether your dog is relaxing inside the motorhome while you explore a museum or your cat is lounging in the fifth wheel during a campground hike, staying connected with your furry friend brings extra peace of mind.

Really?

A new device called PetPhone aims to make the pet/pet parent connection even stronger. Billed as the world’s first smartphone for pets, it combines GPS tracking, two-way communication, activity monitoring, and artificial intelligence—all incorporated into one lightweight collar attachment. While it may sound like science fiction, the technology is already on the market and generating plenty of buzz among pet owners.

The company behind PetPhone

PetPhone was developed by uCloudlink. It’s a global mobile data and connectivity company best known for its CloudSIM technology. Rather than manufacturing traditional smartphones, the company specializes in keeping people—and now pets—connected almost anywhere through cloud-based wireless networks.

PetPhone is part of the company’s growing pet technology platform. It’s designed to help owners monitor their pet’s location, activity, and well-being through a companion smartphone app.

How PetPhone works

PetPhone clips onto your pet’s collar and connects to your smartphone through the petpogo mobile app. The device includes cellular connectivity, GPS positioning, motion sensors, a microphone, a speaker, and several AI-powered monitoring features.

Besides tracking your pet’s location, the collar records activity levels, distance traveled, calories burned, and other wellness information. It can also establish virtual safe zones and send alerts if your pet wanders outside a designated area. Battery life is rated for up to five days under normal use, and the device is water-resistant for everyday adventures.

“Hello, Fido! It’s me!”

One of PetPhone’s most talked-about features is two-way voice communication.

When you want to check in, simply open the petpogo app on your smartphone and initiate a call. Your voice is played through the speaker built into your pet’s collar. That allows your dog or cat to hear you even if you’re hundreds of miles away, provided both devices have network coverage.

For RVers, this could be useful when leaving a pet in the RV for a short grocery run or sightseeing excursion. Hearing a familiar voice may help calm pets that experience separation anxiety.

Can your pet call you?

PetPhone also introduces something rarely seen in pet technology: pet-initiated communication.

Earlier demonstrations showed dogs and cats could trigger calls by performing specific movements that the device recognized. The commercial version now relies on AI to recognize behaviors and emotional changes that indicate your pet may need attention. When those patterns are detected, the app can alert you or initiate communication. This allows you to respond quickly if your pet appears distressed or unusually active.

The idea isn’t that your dog dials your number like a human would. Instead, the collar recognizes behaviors associated with wanting attention or assistance and uses AI to notify you.

What reviewers liked

Early reviewers found the concept refreshingly different from traditional GPS pet trackers.

The ability to actually speak to a pet instead of simply tracking its location stood out as one of the biggest advantages. GPS tracking, geofencing, activity monitoring, and wellness information add practical value beyond the novelty of voice communication.

The lightweight design, long battery life, and worldwide connectivity also make the device attractive for travelers who frequently cross state lines or even international borders.

What reviewers didn’t like

As with any first-generation product, reviewers also pointed out a few drawbacks.

The biggest question is whether pets will consistently understand and respond to voice calls. While hearing a familiar voice may be comforting, no technology can guarantee that a distracted dog will immediately respond to its owner speaking.

Some reviewers also noted that the pet social networking features remain under development and may not appeal to every owner. Because the product depends on cellular connectivity, performance may be limited in remote areas where RVers sometimes camp. As with many connected devices, ongoing service is required for full functionality. However, current purchasing options bundle services rather than using an automatically renewing monthly plan.

Is it worth considering?

For RV owners, PetPhone offers more than just a fun gadget.

Its combination of GPS tracking, geofencing, wellness monitoring, and two-way communication addresses several concerns common among travelers who RV with pets. While it won’t replace responsible supervision, the PetPhone may provide additional confidence when your four-legged companion is relaxing back at camp.

Like many emerging technologies, PetPhone will likely continue evolving with software updates and new features. Even so, it represents an interesting step toward making pets more connected than ever before.

Where to get one

PetPhone is available directly from the official PetPhone website. Today, the device sells for about $90. There are purchase packages that include an initial period of cellular service. Additional service options are available through the company, depending on the package selected.
