How often do you eat a hot dog?

Hot dogs go with camping like a marshmallow goes with a campfire! Well, you get the point. Hot dogs not only go with camping, but they go with outdoor cooking! They go with summer! It’s not summer without a hot dog, right? That’s why we start our summer with hot dogs (Memorial Day) and we end our summer with hot dogs (Labor Day)!

Maybe you eat a hot dog every time you arrive at a new campsite. It is an easy dinner, after all. Maybe you only eat a few hot dogs every summer. Maybe you only roast hot dogs over the fire, so you only eat hot dogs if you have a campfire. Maybe you only eat hot dogs at a baseball game or a local fair. Or maybe you never eat hot dogs at all!

For many RVers, hot dogs are a tradition—they’re simple, nostalgic, and fun. There’s something about sitting around the fire with a stick in hand, watching your hot dog sizzle and brown just the way you like it. It’s less about the meal and more about the memory that comes with it.

Of course, not everyone eats hot dogs the same way. Some pile on the ketchup, mustard, and relish. Others are diehard chili dog fans. And then there are the purists who say a hot dog tastes best plain, straight off the grill. Regional toppings even come into play—think Chicago dogs, Coney dogs, or slaw dogs. Here are America’s best 23 regional hot dogs (maybe you’ll get inspired for your next dog).

And, let’s be honest—part of the appeal is the convenience. Hot dogs are quick, affordable, and easy to pack in the RV fridge. No need for fancy prep, just toss them on the grill or skewer them over the fire. Dinner’s done in minutes, leaving more time to relax at the campsite.

Please vote in today’s poll and, as always, feel free to leave a comment.

Ugh. Now we want a hot dog…

Hot dogs and a glass of lemonade every morning was breakfast in high school boy that was years ago. Now it’s got to be something I real want about once a year and more likely it’s at a fair.

I prefer brats over hotdogs. But even so, probably don’t eat them more than 6-8 times a year.

I love hot dogs in the summer. But my medically required diet won’t let me eat any processed meats.

Reasonably priced? Maybe in the past. A pack of quality dogs is almost 10 bucks at Safeway now….6 at Trader Joe’s. I still love them. Sweet relish and yellow mustard, but Chicago style if I’m out on the town. Mustard only on the big ones at the ball park+ a beer of course. Blue sky, the smell of fresh cut grass, and a home run announced on the PA -and my hot dog….it just doesn’t get any better.

Ten dollars?? Where do you live? They are half that for the premium brands near us, pick any of our grocery chains. I don’t shop at Trader Joes, so I cannot compare them.

We eat a hot dog mostly when we go to Costco.

Like others, I love the ones at Costco, and can’t seem to resist them when we are there! Otherwise, don’t ever seem to eat one…

I love Chicago, kraut, grilled, boiled, microwave hotdogs. I eat them because I love them. My wife eats them and hopes they will give her better buns. (just a joke)

I only buy the long or bun size dogs once in a while and eat a couple, usually when it is late and I don’t feel like figuring out how to prepare a larger meal. My late wife made up about 25 pint jars of zucchini relish, (Delicious!), and I have about 15 remaining. Sadly, dogs are getting more expensive – I’ve tried the turkey dogs – not quite the same. So, I pay the price for the beef. I add onions and mustard. Keeping the buns fresh is a problem, even freezing, they aren’t that good, seem to fall apart, even toasted.

Thank you for the question, RV Travel! I voted “Often,” but with explanation. That is, I usually open the package and eat wieners without applying heat and with only crackers. I find food worth little to no trouble, so eating wieners this way is my default. Admittedly, I am not actually eating hotdogs, but only a part of a hotdog. Have a great day and safe travels!
