The top 10 things I’ve learned while RVing
One of my favorite books is Robert Fulghum’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” I was given this book upon retirement after 40 wonderful years of teaching Kindergarten students. I recently found my treasured book and reread Fulghum’s musings. It got me thinking about my life as it is now. But first, a look back.
My husband retired a year or so ahead of me. He was eager to go on the road with our RV, but I was hesitant. I’d been a teacher for so long, I wondered how I would manage my time. How would my days be ordered if not in 20-minute teaching segments, rambunctious recesses, and lunches spent opening fruit cups and milk cartons?
As it’s turned out, much of what Fulghum says in his famous book can be applied to the RVing life.

When driving, the RV’s roof and sidewalls bulge out. How can I fix this?
Dear Dave,
While returning from our last trip, I noticed the top, front sides of the camper bulging as I drove. When I slowed, or changed direction, the bulge became less. We were heading into a pretty stiff wind. I have repaired water leaks on both sides at the roofline at the front in the past. Is it safe to travel like this? Or should we make repairs? And what would be the best way to go about this? Thanks in advance for your help. —Holly, 2004 Layton Lakeview

Braxton Creek calls this a teardrop trailer, but it really isn’t as far as the traditional shape is concerned, which gives it more space.

Watch your washer floor tray
An RVer who had to replace his defunct RV washing machine got to replace more than he bargained for. The plastic spill tray didn’t contain leaks, and he has a nasty floor replacement job ahead of him. If you have a washer, you might want to add a periodic inspection of your spill tray to your maintenance list. Many are screwed down to the floor, and if the sealant around the screws doesn’t stay sealed, ruination could be the result.

Mexican Street Corn

This grilled corn is the perfect side dish for a Mexican meal. Or, really, any grilled meal. Cooking the corn on the grill adds a wonderful smoky flavor to the kernels. Mayonnaise adds creaminess to the corn. We loved rolling the corn in a cheese and spice mixture. When combined with mayonnaise, it tastes like a creamy cilantro sauce. A fun and flavorful way to prepare corn in the summer.

Which of these states is known for an architectural detail called a “witch window”? South Carolina? Vermont? Indiana? Massachusetts? If you guessed Vermont, you’re correct! In Vermont, many older homes have “witch windows”—windows that are installed into the gable end of a home’s roofline at a 45-degree angle. The name is from an old superstition that witches can’t fly through crooked windows.

Leave here with a laugh is so true! In my state of Utah, most of the I-15 has a speed limit of 80 mph. If you drive 80 mph you will be passed. I often see pick-up trucks pulling a toy hauler pulling a trailer full of ATVs barreling down the freeway in a raging snowstorm at I estimate 90 mph. Same thing with the loaded down semi-trucks. Gotta love Utah!
