RVers share a few handy DIY tips

Many RVers are DIYers (do-it-yourself-ers). Here are some ideas I recently discovered on social media platforms and various campgrounds we recently visited.

Tee tip

If you store your RV sewer hose inside your rig’s rear bumper, listen up! Unless you secure the factory-issued bumper caps, chances are your “stinky slinky” will slither out during travel.

Michael Lajoie shared his tee tip on Facebook. He said, “I drilled holes and stuck a golf tee in. Works well.” Easy, effective, and inexpensive!

Kitty keeper

Irene Charlotte solved her feline fears with help from a dog! Irene explained it like this:

“We travel with 2 cats and needed a space for them. Climbing underfoot while driving or darting for the door at gas stations was too much stress. Previously we had a leak (Class C) that ruined the [cab’s] mattress … We don’t have a need for this sleeping space. [We used] an old dog kennel, bent it to shape the front. It’s been a game changer.”

Old school lock

Remember bicycle locks? One clever Facebook user, Leonia Bullock, uses a bike lock to secure her battery. Thieves take one look and move on.

Handy shoe storage

The “no shoes inside the camper” rule is difficult to enforce if you don’t have a good place to store the shoes.

Denise MN shared her shoe storage solution. Here’s what she said, “I cut into the back of my dinette and made a shoe cubby.” Nice work, Denise. See her result below.

Screen, toddler, and pet protector

Speaking of pets, on a recent RV trip, we noticed this brilliant DIY project. Our neighbor used heavy-duty Velcro to attach plastic lattice to the inside of the entry door. The breeze still flows inside, and excitable pets do not crash through the screen.

Tasty tip

Let’s wrap this up with a very tasty tip: bacon s’mores! Try slipping a strip of bacon into your s’more for a smoky, salty contrast to the sweetness. The bacon’s savory bite makes the sugar pop and deepens the overall flavor.

Grab two graham crackers, a marshmallow, a piece of your favorite chocolate, and a slice of bacon (thick cut is especially yummy).

Cook the bacon over the fire or in a pan until it reaches the crispness you like. (This can be done ahead of time.)

Toast the marshmallow until it develops a golden crust. Place the chocolate, bacon, and toasted marshmallow on a graham cracker. Then top with the second cracker, press together, and enjoy your bacon s’more.

I would love to see more tips like this. For those of us that don’t use Facebook, sharing more tips from the Facebook group would be wonderful.

One of our kids always says “don’t fry bacon in the nude”.
