Maximizing space: 3 compact items for RVers

Big, awkward, and impossible to store. Those words describe items I recently replaced in our RV. Yep, I traded the larger, clunky versions for similar, more compact items—because finding compact items for RVers makes all the difference. I’m so happy I did, too!

For years, I dutifully dragged our big, ol’ box fan out to our fifth wheel. I lugged our heavy-duty vacuum into our RV, too. My arms began to ache by the time I hefted our office printer up the steps and into our rig.

“This is crazy!” I thought. “There has to be a better solution!” So, I began to search for the same items (fan, vacuum, and printer) in much smaller, compact versions.

Every inch counts

When living or traveling in an RV, every inch counts. Limited space means that every item you pack should work hard for you while taking up the least amount of space possible.

We don’t always need a fan when RVing, but when it’s hot we really depend on an efficient way to move the air inside our rig. Finding an out-of-the-way storage solution for a big box fan is practically impossible.

It would fit under our RV bed, except that’s where our hiking gear lives. It might fit in the RV’s basement, but where would the RV equipment and tools go?

Instead, that box fan resides in front of our sofa—no matter what the temperature may be. I try to convince myself it adds a bit of whimsy to the space. (Yes, I occasionally watch HGTV.)

As for the vacuum… I like to keep things clean, but I’m not obsessive about it, especially when camping. I usually vacuum once a week. (We no longer have pets and rarely travel with children.) The only place I’ve found for the vacuum to live is the hallway. There just isn’t another place to put it. The problem is that we must dodge around it every time we go from the living area to the bedroom. I could store the oversized vacuum next to the box fan, but I’m not that whimsical.

Then there’s the office-size printer. That thing weighs a ton! The one time I decided we didn’t need to bring the printer along, we needed it. (Of course!)

I’ve blamed the printer for any and all weight I gain while RVing. That’s because the only place for the printer to be is on our dining table. It takes up 3/4 of the table space. Yes, the printer forces us to eat meals on TV trays while mindlessly watching the “tube.” Mindless eating causes weight gain. Sadly, I’m living proof!

I was pleasantly surprised at the scaled-down versions of the fan, vacuum, and printer that I found. Each works well and has rave reviews. I’m hoping that perhaps my struggle will encourage you to downsize to free up space in your RV, as well.
