Solar panels make off-grid van life easier, but sometimes even a bright, sunny day doesn’t provide the power you expect. There’s one often-overlooked solar panel mistake that can cut solar output by a third or more, and fixing it is simple.
In the video at the end of this post, the team from Staycation Lifestyle shows how to spot and avoid the mistake, with real numbers and examples from a recent test in the Staycation Lifestyle camper van.
The team’s setup uses a 150-watt semi-flexible ETFE solar panel mounted on the van roof, all connected to a Victron Energy Smart Solar MPPT 75/15 controller. The full kit, purchased from Batteries and Solar Plymouth, includes everything from batteries, fixtures, and cabling, to a marine-grade gland for cable protection. This kind of package promises high performance, but only if installed and maintained correctly.
Vehicle movement can slowly wear through cables, especially where they’re routed through metal. That’s why a marine-quality cable gland is a must-have. Why?
- Keeps cables from fraying at sharp holes in metal roofs or pop-tops.
- Prevents water leaks.
- Maintains system safety over time.
Skipping this can lead to frustrating electrical issues and even shorten the life of your panel.
Rated wattage doesn’t always equal real output
Just because a panel says 150 watts rated wattage, that doesn’t mean you’ll see 150 watts actual output every day. Even in perfect sun at 4 p.m., power readouts can seem too low for the weather. Why does this happen, especially when devices like a laptop and tire inflator are drawing power?
Shading, no matter how small, makes a huge difference. Real tests showed how even a nearby branch, falling leaf, or your own hand can dramatically drop the wattage. Here’s what shading did in a few quick experiments:
- Uncovered panel: 91 watts
- A hand or phone covering part of the panel: 65-66 watts (down by 30%)
- One wet leaf: dropped output to 81-83 watts
- Multiple leaves, or more shaded cells: even lower results
Sunshine helps, but solar needs a clear path to stay efficient.
It only takes one stubborn wet leaf or clump of dirt to harm performance. While dry debris often blows away, stuck debris from wind or rain can keep panels shaded for hours or days. Staying mindful of the roof’s state pays off in extra power and longer stays off-grid.
Here’s where it gets real: sticky, tough-to-clean gunk like bird droppings create tiny but persistent shadows. In a demo, mock bird poo brought power down to 78 watts from 91 watts. That’s a loss of more than 10%, just from a few inches’ worth of grime. Regular cleaning stops the bird poo effect from ruining your supply.
Every lost watt counts, especially if you’re parked on a sunny day and counting on your solar system to run a fridge and charge devices. Dirt and shade drain leisure batteries faster. On hot days, fridges work overtime, using even more power. When there’s nowhere to plug in and no engine running, your solar panel is your lifeline.
Get into the habit of checking your roof often. When you wash your van, don’t skip the solar panel. Products designed for solar or vehicle glass work well, just make sure they’re safe for ETFE surfaces. Even a soft sponge makes a difference.
Cleaning tips:
- Remove leaves and twigs right away
- Clean off bird droppings as soon as you spot them
- Use soft, non-abrasive cloths and solar-safe cleaners
- Inspect the glands and cables for wear or leaks
Extra ways to boost solar power
When driving, a DC to DC charger can help top up batteries. Still, if you spend extended time parked off-grid, clean, well-installed solar is the real hero. Routine checks on cable glands and connections prevent power loss or dangling wires.
Even the best panel gives less power if shaded or dirty. Plan for days when output dips, especially during peak summer heat. Know your battery limits, and use extra power only as needed. Keeping solar panels clean and cables protected means more free time and fewer surprises. Tidy panels let van owners relax at the beach or campsite, knowing there’s enough energy for every adventure. A little upkeep goes a long way, keeping the focus on fun.

Because we like to park in the shade, I don’t mount my panels to the roof. I’ll set ‘em up on the ground and angle them to track the sun throughout the day.
Whilst wiring in series increase voltage and lowers amperage, it’s also terribly impacted by shade. One shaded panel affects the total output not just the shaded panel so I wire in parallel. It takes thicker cable due to higher amperage but shade only affects the output of just the shaded panel.
Lastly, cleanliness cannot be overstated. A film of Mojave desert dust on my panels can reduce the output by 15%. Just dust. Imagine what leaves, sap and fade will do.
