A must-have for RVers? Walkie-talkies! Here’s why

By Gail Marsh
You may have tossed them aside once you outgrew “playing spies.” Or perhaps you quickly lost interest when that first cellphone landed in your hands. Whatever your reason, they remain a must-have for RVers: walkie-talkies! This low-tech wonder performs even when your cell signal drops. Walkie-talkies provide nearly instantaneous communication and can keep you connected no matter where you roam. Continue reading.

A modern classic: Riverside RV Retro 171DRD travel trailer tour

By Cheri Sicard
Josh the RV Nerd is back to give us a tour of a travel trailer that might look retro but is actually new: the Riverside RV Retro 171DRD.

What is retro about this RV, and what I like most about it, is its simplicity. No slides. No fancy doodads. It’s just a simple, basic trailer that will serve a couple’s camping needs well. Learn more here.

What is best product to restore sun-faded RV fiberglass?

By Dave Solberg
Dear Dave,
What is the best way to get oxidation out of my RV’s fiberglass from sun damage. I see so many different products and tools for the job on the internet. I was hoping to do it without very expensive tools or specialty compounds that are hard to find. Or am I better off having it done professionally? —Joel, 2015 Winnebago Minnie Winnie, champagne color

After marital fight, husband banned to sleep in RV storage compartment

By Cheri Sicard
I am guessing the amusing YouTube short video below from the Wandering Routes channel was made as a joke as the caption reads:

“Me after ‘winning’ a fight in the RV with my wife.” But honestly, this could work!

If you can’t answer these questions, you shouldn’t be towing

By Dave Kendall
Dear RV Travel,
I’m writing this about trailer towing because it has become dear to my heart, and is probably the most important issue for RVers who tow. What really stimulated my thinking is my experience towing a travel trailer for 22,000 miles and towing a 5th wheel for about 15,000 miles, all in the past five years. … Even more, I am writing because I have become aware that various organizations offer towing classes that only teach people how to back up a trailer. … Here’s a quiz. If a driver cannot answer these basic questions, they are at risk for problems. Read more and take the quiz here.

Quick tip
Be prepared for an unruly slideout

Find out the exact procedures for emergency manual retraction of your slideouts before you need to use them. Write them out in language that you can understand and keep them where you can find them. You probably will never use them, but Boy Scouts have a good motto: Be prepared!

Trivia

The Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snowflake goes to a flake that fell in January 1887 at Fort Keogh in Montana. A nearby rancher called the falling flakes “larger than milk pans” and measured one at about 15 inches wide.

Readers’ pets of the day

“This is our Maggie (the White one) and Oscar (Shih Tzu mixes), watching the ducks at Old Mill Stream campground in Lancaster, PA. They are both rescue pups. Unfortunately, we lost Maggie on January 18, 2024. We rescued her 14 years ago. She was 18 years old when she passed. Oscar is 11 and we got him 10 years ago. We have never stayed in a hotel with either of them. Even when the kids or grandkids got married.” —Tom & Marie Bridgen

We’re so sorry for the loss of your sweet Maggie, Tom and Marie. You were lucky to have loved her for so long (and vice versa!). Give Oscar a belly rub from us.

Send us a photo of your pet with a short description. No blurry photos and please do not submit your photo more than once. Thanks!

My 5’10” wife asked me, are there RV’s designed for tall people 6’6″ and up ? higher ceilings, full sized beds, higher counters, bigger bathrooms?

Sounds like you need to keep an eye on her. 🤭

LOL. I have the opposite issue. My wife is 5’2″ and I installed a knob extension and remote switch for the bathroom ceiling vent, and she has a step stool next to the bed.

I would like to know that as well. I’m 6′-4″, 280lbs. I would love to see some articles on those RVs.

We have used hand held radios for years. Mostly for pulling into (backing into a site) and out of RV sites. Especially useful when we back into our RV garage at home. Eliminates all the crazy hand signals, “yelling” and visual blind spots. The down side is that we provide no entertainment for all the other RV’ers watching us back into a tight fitting site…LOL!

Thank you, Emily and Diane! 🙂 Such a beautiful and sweet picture of Maggie and Oscar, Tom and Marie! 🙂 So sorry that you lost Maggie, that is much to move past. I am glad that you still have Oscar, but sorry, too, that his friend is missing. The I-50 roadtrip appeals the most to me. Interesting set of alternatives. 🤔 Thanks again, have a great day, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
