Brilliant tip to keep your pet(s) safe at campgrounds

By Cheri Sicard
Keeping your pets safe and secure at the campground is a high priority for any responsible pet parent.

If your fur baby has even gotten loose while camping, you already know the terror it can induce. Especially if your dog is anything like my former dog, Budley, who thought it a fun game to play catch me if you can.

Even if you are super careful, things can happen and a pet can accidentally get loose. The door doesn’t latch behind you, the leash breaks, the dog slips out when someone comes in, etc. This easy little tip can help you get a wayward pet back quickly.

Ask Dave
I winterized with RV antifreeze. Why does it come out of low point drains?

Dear Dave,
After I winterize with the RV antifreeze, I open the low point drains on my supply lines and I lose a ton of RV antifreeze. Is that incorrect? —Stephen, 2018 Thor Windsport Class A  Read Dave’s answer.

The naughty secret revealed: Plastic pink flamingos in RV parks are far from what they appear

By Nanci Dixon
Do you know the secret meaning of two plastic pink flamingos and upside-down pineapples? They have been appearing in neighborhoods and RV parks lately. We didn’t either, although we have noticed a few dotting campgrounds as we travel. “Aren’t those cute?” I asked. We learned the true meaning of pink flamingos from our RV neighbor. It may surprise you. You can learn here, if you don’t already know.

Quick tip(s)
Have hot water handy all day in RV while conserving LP

From Claudia T. in our comments: “When we use our Keurig for morning coffee (electric hookup or generator), I make extra hot water and fill a carafe so I have hot water for washing dishes or washing my face without need to use the propane water heater.” Thanks, Claudia!

That reminds us of this tip from RVer Bill H. awhile back. He conserves LP, but still keeps hot water available. He found a large coffee urn (45 cups or so) at a yard sale. He keeps it on his galley counter when hitched to shore power. Bill says it’s plenty to keep the dishes clean and for the occasional cup of tea or noodles. He plugs it in first thing in the morning, keeps it topped off throughout the day, and shuts it down at night. Thank you, Bill!

Bill’s tip prompted Roger Marble, the Tireman, to comment: “Saw the Quick Tip on having hot water handy all day. In our 21-foot Class C we really do not have the counter space for a large coffee urn. We added a ‘Hott Rod’ water tank heater. One advantage for us is we have hot water for showers and in both sinks. This and other brands are available at Amazon.” Thanks, Roger!

And the survey says…

We’ve polled RVtravel.com readers more than 2,500 times in recent years. Here are a few things we’ve learned about them:

• 11 percent do not enjoy visiting small-town museums.
• 28 percent have read John Steinbeck’s book “Travels with Charley.”
• 11 percent have been in an auto accident that sent them to the hospital for more than 24 hours.

Recent poll: Have you ever had a problem with a slide-out that delayed your travel?

Trivia

Wrigley’s gum was the first product with a barcode to be scanned at a supermarket (in 1974).

Readers’ pet of the day

“Miss Kitty (of Gunsmoke fame) was rescued about a year ago as a 2-3 year old. She is hyper-alert and high energy so we were not sure how she would handle RVing. But she adapted quickly and was fascinated and entertained by our 3-month loop around the Midwest over the summer.” —Tony Grigg

Send us a photo of your pet with a short description. We publish one each weekday in RV Daily Tips and in our Sunday RV Travel newsletter. No blurry photos, please! Please do not submit your photo more than once. Thanks!

Leave here with a laugh

The sergeant major yelled, “Private Philpott, I didn’t see you at camouflage training this morning!” Philpott replied, “Thank you, sir!”

It is actually less expensive to heat water with electricity than LP – especially if you leave the hot water heater running 24/7. Dave published the math here about a year ago.
Our small TT’s water heater is LP only. It is also a newer Dometic with a drain cap rather than a plug. Have yet to see a hot rod conversion that uses an internal thread cap rather than an internal thread plug. We leave the 6 gallon heater off unless we truly need hot water.

Thank you, Emily and Diane! 🙂 Miss Kitty certainly looks regal, Tony! 🙂 I hope you have many trips together. Yes, I do have one of those (i.e., a turntable); two, in fact. One is conventional and plays unscratched but slightly warped records. The other is linear tracking and plays scratched but unwarped records flawlessly. 🙂 Have a great day and safe travels! 🙂

I hate to say it but I think Floridians are finally getting the message. I am in NC and I have seen more Florida license plates then I am for NC. Yeah it is going to be a bumpy ride. Stay safe out there.

We use our camper for both travell and recreation. When not traveling it is parked at a seasonal lakeside campground site.
