Would you pay an additional $10 a night for an extra wide RV site?

33

Let’s face it, at some RV parks – no, make that MANY RV PARKS – the campsites are so closely packed together you can hear your neighbor snore at night. It is not uncommon for neighboring RVers’ slideouts to almost touch each other.

Sites are often so close that a neighbor’s picnic table can be almost right under your own window. And if your neighbor lights up a cigarette … well, it’s good if you are a fan of tobacco smoke.

Being so tightly packed can be frustrating, and take away a lot of the enjoyment of an RV stay.

What if an RV park with mostly tightly packed sites offered premium sites where there was, say, an extra 10 to 15 feet between sites? Would you pay an extra $10 for the extra space?

Remember, it can take a few moments for the poll to show up. So stand by.

Free and cheap places to stay in an RV, Issue 968

Free and inexpensive places to stay with your RV in the U.S. and Canada!

Updated weekly

When it comes to free places to stay a night in an RV, Walmart is the best bet. We estimate that about 60 percent of all its stores in the USA allow stays in self-contained RVs.

Other businesses that allow free overnight stays include Flying J Travel Centers, Cabela’s, Cracker Barrel restaurants (official policy is overnight stays are NOT permitted although most stores allow the practice), Costco and Kmart. Many RVers routinely stay in shopping center or factory outlet parking lots. Many casinos allow or even encourage overnight stays in RVs.

Recent reports of free and inexpensive places to stay with an RV:

From OvernightRVParking.com

Meat Cove Rd Unpaved Turnout, Meat Cove, NS
FREE! Overnight parking is allowed. Small unpaved turnout is about 60 ft. long, on the ocean side of the road, but is not separated from the road. Park to allow other vehicles to park, at least to the greatest extent allowed by the size of your RV. Level, unlit, quiet, and appears safe. No amenities. RVer says the views are amazing. Click for details.

Chevron Jacumba, Jacumba Hot Springs, CA
FREE! Overnight parking is allowed in a huge unpaved lot across Carrizo Gorge Rd from station, next to I-8. Park without obstructing movement by any other vehicles. Not level, with a general slope downhill to the S and with undulating areas, but there are level spots to be found. The lot is well-lit and believed to be safe; possible truck noise and likely I-8 traffic noise. One RVer reports being allowed to stay for multiple nights. Chevron station has a convenience store; the adjacent Shell station also has Subway on site. Click for details

Overnight RV Parking, with more than 14,000 locations listed, is the largest and best resource for locating free and inexpensive places to spend a night in an RV. Two excellent guides to free campgrounds
Roundabout Publications has teamed up with the Ultimate Public Campground Project on these two new guides. Discover thousands of designated camping areas in the West and in America’s Heartland – real places – not big box store parking lots. Included are areas managed by various governmental agencies. Learn more about the West edition or Heartland edition.

And this guidebook should be an essential resource for RVers who boondock on public lands: Bureau of Land Management Camping.

Facebook user Jeanne McKenzie left a great reminder on our Facebook group, Free Campgrounds. She wrote, “All Texas rest stops and picnic areas allow overnight parking. You just have to put up with noise from semis.”

Another Facebook user, Errol Calvert, writes, “We have for years camped FREE in old, small, rundown airports. Many are happy to just have someone around to stop vandals.” Now that’s a thought!

Big changes coming to Walmart stores. Will RVers be affected?

By Russ and Tiña De Maris
We’re not sure that Sam Walton would recognize the store that he spawned as “Walmart Discount City” back in 1962. While there have been a lot of changes since then, Walmart’s new design decidedly makes Sam’s original stores look somehow quaint. Haven’t seen one yet? It won’t be long before you do: Walmart’s new design is based on the digital age, and there’ll be 200 of them by the end of January. Give it another year, and the big corporation says it’ll have 1,000.

Digital age

Walmart is sold on the idea that going digital means more customers. The Walmart app is central to the new design. But if you don’t have the Wally app, fear not, the store will still serve you. Before you go, you’ll likely have checked yourself out using an electronic kiosk. But if you’ve got the app, in some stores you won’t even need to bother with a pause: Scan & Go, a part of your e-gear, will let you scan your purchases as you pick them up, then head out the door without further ado.

Got a shopping list, but aren’t familiar with the store layout? Not a problem – Walmart’s new design combines that Walmart app with aisles labeled with numbers and letters. Look at your app, you’ll find exactly where to go.

Signage upgrades

Even if you don’t have an app, Walmart’s new design will still point the way. On entry to the store, customers will find “way finding” methods reminiscent of a trip to a modern airport. Signage near the entry will direct you to major departments. Large graphics over those same departments will make them easy to spot.

Outside signage is also getting an upgrade with a nod to the digital age. So many folks are using their Walmart apps to pre-order groceries and other goods these days. The problem is like some have encountered: If you’re not familiar with the particular store where you’re making a pickup, where to go? A huge blue arch hangs above the area of the store where customers can drive to pick up their goods. Walmart says the signs will be so gigantic you won’t be able to miss them from nearly anywhere in the parking lot.

Still the RVer’s friend?

The entire process is aimed at pumping you through the store at a faster pace. For the health-conscious, even stores without the “scan and go” option will make contactless transactions standard fare. If you’re concerned about COVID-19 while traveling, the self-serve kiosks will cut down on exposure opportunities. The true “contactless” operation at “select locations” would beef it up that much more.

With Walmart’s new design, will it still be the RVer’s friend?
We don’t look to see airport-similar stacked parking garages replacing the acres of asphalt of today. We asked Walmart Corporate to comment on any changes that might mean less room for your RV. The company was kind enough to send us an automated reply, indicating they’d try to get back to us on the next business day. They didn’t. But with all we could gather, we saw nothing about decreasing parking lot sizes or any changes in RV overnight policies.

After we finally reach a Walmart spokesperson and get a firm response, we’ll let you know.

RVelectricity: Industry update – Dometic 12-volt DC refrigerator – first look impressions

18

By Mike Sokol

Dometic 12-volt DC refrigerator testing

Back in BC (Before COVID) I made a few acquaintances in the Dometic refrigeration division, and they promised to send me a 10-cubic-foot 12-volt DC compressor refrigerator as part of my study on refrigerator power consumption. I had almost given up on a test unit, when I received a call from my local trucking company about delivery. True to their word, a DMC4101 refrigerator has arrived for review.

I’ll begin a full review of its operation and power consumption in a few weeks, but for grins I simply loaded up the freezer with a 50% mix of frozen and room temperature meats and veggies, put a few 6-packs of warm beer in the fridge, set it to 5 Snowflakes of cold (yes, that’s the max cooling setting), and connected it to a 12 volt battery. So it got very cold, very quickly.

Baby, it’s cold inside…

Here’s a few quick pictures of how cold it got, and how long it took. As you can see, the freezer section was able to get down to a chilly 12.7 degrees F with a fairly decent load of consumables. While that’s not exactly a deep freeze temp of below 0 degrees, it’s more than cold enough to keep meats and veggies frozen for weeks on end. My wife and son are both ServSafe certified for proper food handling in the kitchen and during catering, and they concur with my conclusions about safe freezer temperatures.

There’s more than just cold, baby…

But my neat little Bluetooth thermometer has a logging function so you see how long it took to take the plunge. As you can see, it started at an ambient temp of 69.8 degrees, then plummeted to a minimum of 1.8 degrees air temp in about 2 hours. It eventually settled in around 12 degrees as shown above. And you can see the normal temperature swings of the thermostat, which look right on target to me. (Update: It was at an average of 4 degrees F this morning)

Note this was from a warm-start in a 70 degree room. That is, I didn’t pre-chill the fridge as recommended. I just loaded the freezer with a 50/50 mix of frozen meat and veggies, set it to 5 Snowflakes, and turned on the power.

The obvious comparison

Compared to a 3-way propane fridge, this is pretty amazing. Yes, you’ll still need an additional way to recharge your RV batteries either from solar panels, a small generator or CarGenerator™, or possibly a Flux Capacitor (just kidding). But these 12-volt DC compressor refrigerators with a Danfoss compressor not only are way more efficient than their 120-volt AC counterparts, they don’t lose conversion power stepping 12-volts DC up to 120-volt AC though an inverter.

More detail in a few weeks…

I have several other tests that I need to get through first, but I’ll have a few reviews on this refrigerator next month.

In the meantime, let’s play safe out there….

New Ford F-150 EV: Bigger, faster truck – far less cost

6

By James Raia
The anticipated debut of the Ford F-150 EV (battery-electric) pickup truck is still about two years away. But the manufacturer believes it will cost about half as much to operate as its current gas-powered stablemates.

The new version of the country’s best-selling vehicle will also be the most powerful Ford truck ever made.

The Ford F-150 EV will cost about half as much to operate as its gas-run siblings.
The Ford F-150 EV will cost about half as much to operate as its gas-run siblings.

With zero gas and oil usage, low electric charging rates and lower maintenance costs, the Ford F-150 EV truck will thrive on its efficiency, according to Kumar Galhotra, Ford’s president of the Americas and International Markets Group.

Ford F-150 EV: Fastest ever

Scheduled to the begin production in mid-2022, the Ford F-150 EV will have the fastest 0-to-60 mph time and produce the most torque and horsepower in the nameplate’s history.

Without an engine, Ford is touting the new truck with a “giant front” for increased storage.

Ford has dominated the pickup truck segment for decades. But the EV truck market is likely to include stiff competition. Tesla, Rivian and Nikola are newcomers to the segment. The three truck newcomers are only making EV trucks.

While any new Ford truck creates plenty of interest, the carmaker’s EV participation will expand the prominent truck series, a popular choice for RVers.

The current Ford F-150 pickup truck lineup has a towing capacity from 5,000 to 13,200 pounds with a specialty towing package.

Don’t tow a car behind your RV. “Subscribe” to a car instead

0

By James Raia
One potential inconvenience for RVers is determining if they’re going to need another vehicle while traveling. Not all cars are towable, and towable models and makes have different methods.

But if you need a vehicle at your RVing destination, there’s an increasingly popular, more convenient and possibly less expensive alternative to towing a car or renting a vehicle.

Much like health club memberships and movie-watching services, regional and national companies, including several carmakers, now allow consumers to subscribe to a car.

SIXT is expanding throughout the United States and allows consumers to subscribe to a car.
SIXT is expanding throughout the United States and allows consumers to subscribe to a car.

SIXT, the German-originated former rental-only car company, and T4L, Inc., both based in Florida, and manufacturers from BMW to Hyundai, are offering customizable car subscriptions. SIXT’s website includes a map pinpointing airport and city locations throughout the United States.

Subscribe to a car? AAA says yes

The American Automobile Association (AAA) also offers car subscriptions in selected states, including a test market fleet of all-electric Volkswagen E-Golfs in Sacramento, California.

“As auto customers continue to explore the growing mobility market, service-related offerings are becoming more in demand,” said Allen Witters, CEO of T4L. “Our members will enjoy easier vehicle access, a better overall dollar value, a hassle-free transportation experience, and best-in-class customer service.”

According to company president Sebastian Birkel of the venture technically called SIXT+, consumers have become more accustomed to subscription services.

“We see that mobility needs have changed, particularly during this pandemic,” said Birkel. “You have some people who say, ‘I would always prefer individual mobility over mass transit, but I may not want to go into a financial obligation for the next few years.”

Flexibility is the company’s unwritten motto.

“There are other people who say ‘I just need a car right now’,” said Birkel. “‘I don’t want to wait until it’s delivered or whatever.’ So we came up with the subscription idea.”

RVers staying at locations for at least a month acquire a car subscription.

Every subscription under the T4L Membership includes insurance, taxes and registration, vehicle swap, maintenance covering tires, brakes, batteries, wiper blades, vehicle refresh and software updates, supercharging, roadside service support and concierge priority service.

“We believe this is priceless to someone who is passionate about electric vehicles,” said Witters. “The trend is the result of consumers uncertain about a new purchase in uncertain times.”

“It just hasn’t lifted off in the car industry, yet,” he said. “I believe with cars it’s the same thing. I don’t know if people are aware, those who own a car, how often the car is parked and not being used. If you factor in all the total costs of ownership of a vehicle, you come to the conclusion that a subscription is actually, very, very cheap.”

SIXT’s debut into the car subscription marketplace arrives as the company, present in more than 110 countries, also announced a partnership with mobile transport provider Lyft.

In selected cities, SIXT customers can subscribe and reserve a vehicle via the Lyft app, with planned expansion throughout the country pending.

SIXT also recently acquired 10 airport locations vacated by the now-defunct rental car agency Advantage.

The subscribe model has also been introduced in other regions of the country, some catering to higher-end vehicles, others to the expanding EV industry.

Subscription car service companies are hoping for increased market shares, with consumers considering depreciation, dealer fees, interest rates, maintenance and other monetary and convenience factors.

Auto subscriptions are not only all-inclusive, consumers using vehicles only when they need them is environmentally savvy.

“It all adds up at the end of the day,” said Birkel. “I believe if you do such a subscription model and you just turn the car back when you don’t need it, you’ll be better off. And you will always have a fresh car.”

Every TL4 membership, with prices from its leading electric vehicle lineup, ranges from $600 to $2,270 per month. It’s an inclusive fee: Insurance, taxes and registration to vehicle swap. Full maintenance — tires, brakes, batteries, wiper blades, vehicle refresh and software updates, charging, roadside service support — are all included, and many more priority concierge services.

Prospective T4L members can build and request a vehicle. Once a vehicle has been configured and requested, a T4L concierge contacts the enrollee to provide membership, subscription, vehicle selection, deposit and delivery expectations detailed.

Vehicle delivery is expected within 90 days and arrives fully charged and with T4L new membership kit, and a membership app. For more information, visit https://t4l.me.

The SIXT+ service monthly fee ranges from $459 to $979 per month. Routine maintenance and various other service costs are included in plans with varied mileage allowance and protection packages. Vehicle exchanges are available for $49.

Customers can change to a new car or model category for $49 per swap. Changing categories will trigger a new price tier. This is a change from SIXT’s previous subscription service, SIXT Flat Nonstop, in which users choosing the SIXT Flat Seasons package could change vehicles by season.

Subscription cars will be provided through SIXT’s downtown locations that don’t carry the airport’s exorbitant facility fees and taxes. For more information, visit https:/sixt.com/plus.

The AAA’s car subscription service varies by state. For details, visit: AAA Car Subscription.

UNITED STATES RECALLS

RECREATION VEHICLES

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Vengeance BVGF312A, BCKT24PACK14, BVGF312A, BVGF315A11, BVGF316A, BVGF316A11, BVGF320A, BWZVGF312A, BWZVGF316A and BWZVGF320A trailers. The Federal Placard may indicate an incorrect amount of water for trailers with the 100-gallon option, allowing the trailer to be overloaded. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 120, “Wheels and Rims-Other than Passenger Cars” and 567, “Certification.” An overloaded trailer has an increased risk of a crash. Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will install a new placard that reflects the 100-gallon tank, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin October 21, 2020. Owners may contact Forest customer service at 1-260-499-2100. Forest River’s number for this recall is 17-1193.

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Coachmen Sportscoach and Forest River Legacy and 2018-2021 Berkshire motorhomes built on a Daimler Trucks (DTNA) chassis. The tire valve stem extension for the inner wheel may come in contact with the outer wheel rim opening and become damaged. What is a recall?
When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a car or item of motor vehicle equipment creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that car or equipment at no cost to the consumer. That can be done by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund (for equipment) or, in rare cases, repurchasing the car.

What should I do if my vehicle is included in this recall?
If your vehicle is included in this recall, it is very important that you get it fixed as soon as possible given the potential danger to you and your passengers if it is not addressed. You should receive a separate letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, notifying you of the recall and explaining when the remedy will be available, whom to contact to repair your vehicle or equipment, and to remind you that the repair will be done at no charge to you. If you believe your vehicle is included in the recall, but you do not receive a letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, please call NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or contact your vehicle manufacturer or dealership.

Thank you for your attention to this important safety matter and for your commitment to helping save lives on America’s roadways.

Here are some useful websites regarding recalls:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is the agency which handles vehicle recalls.
• Here is a link to the main NHTSA website, which covers everything they do.
• Here’s a link to where you can enter your vehicle’s VIN to see if it has ever been involved in a recall.

RVelectricity: Avoid space heater danger: What you need to know – Part 1

19
By Mike Sokol

This is a special two-part article on a topic that’s not only seasonal, it’s very important to your safety, both in your home and your RV. This is about electric space heaters and how dangerous they can be if not used correctly. Be sure to answer the poll at the bottom of this story where we ask about whether you do or do not use a space heater in your RV.

Close to home

In 2017, in Hagerstown, MD, (my town, in fact) there was a house fire around 3 a.m. which resulted in the death of a mother and her adult son. Her co-workers said the victim used electric space heaters extensively in her house. She must have had a few close calls (small fires?) since everyone seemed to be worried about her using them to heat her house. The fire inspector reported that she had a portable electric space heater plugged into a string of outlet strips, and the wiring was covered in old newspapers. That’s a sure recipe for disaster.

Are electric space heaters really dangerous? Well, don’t just take my word for it. Here’s what safeelectricity.org says about them.

Why do we use them

Portable space heaters can be a quick way to heat up a room. However, they can be as dangerous as they are convenient if used improperly. These heaters cause at least 25,000 home fires a year, along with 6,000 emergency room visits, according to the Harvard University Environmental Health & Safety group.

Approximately one-third of all house fires nationwide happen during the cold home-heating months between December and February. Equipment that is intended to add a little extra warmth, such as space heaters, is the leading cause of these fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Are they dangerous?

So, exactly what can go wrong with an electric space heater that makes them so dangerous, especially in a confined space like an RV? In Part 1, this week, I’ll discuss the issues of current draw and in Part 2, next week, we’ll delve into flammable material issues.

It’s all about the watts, and the amperage needed to make those watts happen. If you remember some of the electrical math I’ve used in the past, wattage is simply volts times amperes (or V x I on this Ohm’s Law chart). That suggests we can divide the wattage of the appliance by the voltage and find out how many amps it draws.

Here are the numbers

A 1,500-watt space heater on a 120-volt outlet is 1,500/120 = 12.5 amperes. And an 1,800-watt space heater works out to 1,800/120 = 15 amperes. And while a properly installed and maintained electrical outlet should be able to sustain that amount of current indefinitely, few home (or RV) owners do routine inspection and maintenance of their electrical outlets.

If you do draw 15 to 20 amps continuously from an outlet, it can begin to heat up. That heating will soon cause the electrical contacts to oxidize and increase their resistance. And that resistance will increase the heating effect, which causes more resistance, which leads to something we engineers call cascade failure. That can eventually result in a char around the outlet itself and a potential fire.

How to know if this is happening? If the outlet your space heater is plugged into feels warm to the touch or has any dark marks around it, then the outlet contacts have been overheated and it should be replaced.

Danger, Will Robinson….

Importantly, NEVER run any electric space heater from an extension cord, especially a light-gauge one. Anything that draws 15 amps continuously needs at least a 14-gauge extension cord, and a 12-gauge cord is way better. That’s a really heavy extension cord for that little space heater. And never put two space heaters on a single outlet or extension cord. As you can see in my video, an overloaded extension cord can reach the boiling point of water easily.

Doing it safely

So what can we do to avoid electrical outlet overload and heat our RVs safely with electricity? First, if you need to use any space heater at all, use it on a low-wattage setting. I think that a 1,200-watt space heater or a 1,500 watt heater set on 750 watts is the largest I would use on a conventional electrical outlet, and even then it shouldn’t be run unattended. And make sure your smoke detectors are operational.

Safer solutions

Second, if you really need that much electrical heat (and it’s certainly cheaper than heating with propane you pay for yourself), then the CheapHeat product is a safe and effective solution if properly installed. The CheapHeat system is specially designed to be able to run continuously as part of your RV’s furnace, and since it’s hard-wired into your circuit panel there’s no electrical outlet in the current path to overheat.

Campground perspective

Do campgrounds actually welcome the use of the CheapHeat furnace system? At first blush you may think not, since it does cost them more in their monthly electric bill compared to everyone heating with propane. However, they really DON’T like electric space heaters simply due to the risk of fire.

So, if you plan to heat your RV electrically, then do it correctly with a hard-wired heating system that’s designed from scratch for the job. Also, I think that anyone installing a permanent electric heating system should consider upgrading their twist-lock shore power inlet to a SmartPlug, which has 20 times the contact area of an RV traditional twist-lock inlet.

A 10-second poll

Please take this short poll showing if you use a portable space heater in your RV. (It may take a few moments for the poll to load.)

Join me next week for Part 2, where I’ll discuss various technologies for space heaters including coil, ceramic and oil filled. Are any of these technologies more efficient or safer than the others? Tune in next week.

Let’s play safe out there….
